This week, we’d like to tell you Alvie’s story. Alvie is a very brave ginger cat who was signed over to the care of the incredible MINight VET Chester/Wirral team, after being found in lots of pain with mysterious injuries as a young kitten.

The MiNightVet team administered strong pain relief to help Alvie feel better, and took x-rays of his spine and back legs, as after a thorough clinical examination, they were suspicious of fractures. Sadly, their suspicions were proved correct – both of Alvie’s back legs were broken.

After stabilising Alvie and getting him comfortable, the MiNightVet team turned to our fantastic surgery Specialists Marko Stejskal and Erika Bianchini to fix Alvie’s legs. To prepare for surgery, Alvie was assessed by our Specialist anaesthesia team. As well as designing him a tailored anaesthetic plan, they performed an epidural with local anaesthetic to ensure Alvie’s surgery was completely pain-free. Working together to minimise the time it took to perform the surgery, Marko and Erika repaired Alvie’s left leg by placing 2 metal pins to fix the break. In Alvie’s right leg, the fracture was located very close to the hip joint – this meant that the best option was a procedure called a femoral head and neck excision (FHNE), where the top part of the femur (thigh bone) is removed. Check out Alvie’s ‘before and after’ x-rays!

Throughout his anaesthetic and surgery, and during his hospitalisation, Alvie was monitored diligently by our team of amazing registered veterinary nurses. Both the Chestergates and MiNightVet nursing teams gave Alvie the very best care, ensuring he always felt safe, warm and comfortable.

One of our clinicians adopted Alvie shortly before he underwent his surgery, making sure he had a safe, loving home to go once his legs were fixed. For a few weeks, Alvie spent most of his time confined to a crate to ensure his fractures healed properly (with plenty of cuddle intermissions!) – but since then, he has flourished in his new home and is now the boss of the household.

We are immensely grateful to the MiNightVet team for saving Alvie, and to our Chestergates team for fixing him. Without the dedication and care shown by our colleagues, Alvie wouldn’t have been able to live the happy, carefree life he has today. THANK YOU team Chestergates & Team MiNightVet, and WELL DONE Alvie!!!

🎉 Huge congratulations to Pablo, our Head of Diagnostic Imaging, on his latest publication in the Journal of Small Animal Practice (JSAP) 🧬🐾JSAP is the journal of the British Small Animal Veterinary Association and also the official scientific journal of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, which covers veterinary medicine and surgery relating to dogs, cats and other companion animals. The title of Pablo's publication is “Primary intracranial meningeal histiocytic sarcoma causing calvarial hyperostosis in a dog” - this is a report of the MRI images from a rare form of brain tumour in a dog that Pablo helped to diagnose.
This is a great achievement which makes a meaningful contribution to advancing veterinary understanding of this unusual condition and may help patients with similar tumours in future.
We’re incredibly proud to have such brilliant minds on our team 👏📚

Our amazing anaesthetist Giulia Marchionne was selected to present her research in Córdoba, Spain last month. She created a poster to display at the annual Congress of the Spanish Society of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (Sociedad Española de Anestesia y Analgesia Veterinaria, or SEAAV for short!).

The title of Giulia’s research is: ‘Survey on veterinary anaesthesia practices for computed tomography in small animal referral hospitals in the UK’. This is an important investigation into the anaesthetic protocols used by veterinary anaesthetists for patients undergoing CT scans, and is a first step into developing beneficial guidelines for this specialised procedure.

Attending international conferences and conducting research is an important part of our clinicians' roles here at Chestergates Veterinary Specialists. Our team works at the top of their field, contributing to the progression of our profession by sharing their knowledge and scientific research with colleagues across the globe.

What is even more incredible is that Giulia’s first language is Italian, NOT Spanish – amazingly, she presented and discussed her research with attendees of the Congress in her third language.

We are so proud of Giulia’s talents – clinical, scientific and linguistic! Congratulations Giulia!

🐾 Meet Frodo, our brave little explorer who recently had quite the unexpected misadventure at the beach! While out enjoying the sand and sea, Frodo gobbled up a discarded chicken skewer (yep, stick and all 😬) before his owner could stop him.
Thankfully, Frodo’s quick-thinking family took him straight to his vets at who referred him to us. Using a tool called an endoscope—a flexible camera that lets us look inside the stomach without surgery—our medic Matt and his team were able to safely remove the skewer before it caused any serious harm. 🩺✨
💡 What’s an endoscope? It’s a thin, bendy tube with a camera on the end that vets can guide through the mouth and into the stomach. It means no major surgery, less recovery time, and a much happier pup!
We're thrilled to say Frodo did incredibly well and was back on his paws in no time. 🐶💚
If your pet eats something they shouldn’t, contact your vet ASAP.
Way to go, Frodo! You're a star patient ⭐

🐾Read on to meet our current fantastic team of Veterinary Interns and find out their insights into working at Chestergates 🐾

💙What is a Veterinary Intern? 💙
Interns are fully qualified vets. These talented professionals rotate through multiple disciplines—from surgery and internal medicine to emergency care and anaesthesia —gaining hands-on experience while working alongside our specialists for a year long program.
We took a moment to ask them about their experiences here...

💚What has been your most interesting day here so far?
"I helped one of the Orthopaedic specialists to repair a very complex bilateral elbow joint fracture on a Spaniel puppy. Achieving a good outcome in the end makes the whole process incredibly rewarding. This is a good example of the reason why we become Vets in the first place" - Pablo

💚What has surprised you about working in a multidisciplinary hospital?
"The level of organization required to run the hospital smoothly and the close working relationship between departments. The very impressive skills and knowledge of the whole team, but especially the nurses." - Laura

💚What would your advice be to any other vets considering an internship?
"Research the internship in advance and find the right team/setting. Working in a referral hospital is exciting and very different to first opinion practice, however a lot of the knowledge and skills are transferable, so I would recommend even if you are not sure about further specialisation yet". - Gemma

🌾Grass Seeds🌾
It’s grass seed season! These barbed seeds easily attach to fur and can burrow into the skin, causing pain and infection.

Watch for These Signs:
👂Ears: Head shaking, scratching, and discomfort may indicate a seed lodged in the ear. These don’t work their way out and may need removal under sedation or anaesthetic.
👀Eyes: Redness, weeping, pawing, or squinting can signal a seed under the eyelid. Prompt vet attention is needed to prevent damage.
🐾Feet: Lameness, licking, swelling, or oozing between toes could mean a seed has pierced the skin. These can travel up the leg and may cause infections.

Prevention Tips:

🌾Avoid areas with long grass during summer.
🌾Trim coats, especially around feet, ears, and between toes – particularly
important for breeds like spaniels.
🌾After walks, check your dog thoroughly and remove any visible seeds.

🎉Spotlight on Nikki, our new RECOVER Certified Rescuer! 🎉
Although we hope to never have to use them, it is vital that our team stay up to date with their CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) skills. All of our clinical team members are trained in CPR to ensure a confident, coordinated response during an emergency.

One of our fabulous Veterinary Nurses, Nikki, has taken this one step further and recently gained the RECOVER initiative rescuer qualification. RECOVER is a worldwide veterinary task force that provides guidelines and training for CPR in cats and dogs.

Nikki spent 6 weeks completing the Basic and Advanced Life Support courses, before completing an in-person RECOVER Certification workshop, which combined a review of key concepts with practical training using simulated scenarios. The training is 8 hours long, with practical assessments. Participants must pass to obtain certification as a RECOVER Certified BLS and ALS Rescuer® - and that's exactly what Nikki has done!

Nikki said: "Completing the RECOVER course was really interesting, it provided me with a greater depth of knowledge and has helped improve my confidence when emergencies occur"

In addition to this, Nikki is a St Johns Ambulance trained First Aider and helped organise the purchase and installation of a human Automatic External Defibrillator for us at Chestergates. You may have spotted this recently being installed on the outside of our building. We are pleased to be able to provide this lifesaving device which is available to the public 24/7.

A huge well done to Nikki for passing the RECOVER CPR course and becoming a certified Rescuer® - her new knowledge & skills will help our whole team, and our amazing patients!
