Meet Heidi! From stray to my very own pampered princess 🥹
You might remember the post I made a few weeks ago after my sister in law found a female German Shepherd straying. I offered to look after her while we tried to find her owners. At the time, I thought nothing of it, I often end up bringing random dogs home (I probably should’ve known it would bite me in the bum one day 😆)
As the weeks went by, no owners came forward. Instead, we slowly pieced together parts of her story. We’d been told she’d been living at some allotments and hadn’t had the life she deserved. Somewhere along the way, this sweet girl completely stole our hearts. Between vet visits, endless phone calls, trying to find her owner or get her help, and many back and forth conversations about whether we could really have a second dog, she quietly made herself part of the family.
With no name and no one coming forward to claim her, we named her Heidi 🥰
Not long after, we discovered Heidi had an external tumour on her abdomen, was underweight, and had been bleeding for far longer than a normal season, meaning she could have had pyometra. At 11 years old, her future suddenly felt very uncertain. Every vet appointment seemed to end with the same two options: hand her over to the dog warden, where she would likely either be euthanised or spend the rest of her life in kennels, or somehow find the thousands of pounds needed to save her with no insurance due to being a stray.
Thankfully, German Shepherd Dog Rescue stepped in. I will never be able to thank them enough for taking Heidi under their care and raising the funds for the emergency surgery she desperately needed.
Last Tuesday, Heidi had her operation, and now she has the chance to enjoy the life she always deserved. She now has a new brother, Joey, who she follows absolutely everywhere and is quite literally attached to his hip (much to his dismay but, we have no doubt she’ll win him over too😆)
We may never know what Heidi’s life looked like before she found us, but we do know what it will look like from now on: a warm bed, good food, long walks, endless love and a family who absolutely adores her.
She well and truly is my little girl and for however long we’re lucky enough to have her, she’ll never know anything other than being loved❤️
