๐ฌ Trick Training Mini-Series: Teaching Play Dead / Sleep
Step 1: The Settled Lie Down
Every great trick starts with a solid foundation, and before we teach Play Dead or Sleep, we need a relaxed, settled lie down.
Many dogs can perform a quick "down," but for these tricks we want them to be comfortable staying in position and relaxing their body. This makes the later stages much easier and clearer for the dog.
๐พ How to teach it:
โ
Cue or lure your dog into a down.
โ
Reward calmness and stillness.
โ
Watch for your dog to naturally relax onto one hip or soften their posture.
โ
Mark and reward the relaxed position.
โ
Gradually build duration so your dog is happy remaining settled.
The goal isn't just getting your dog on the floor, it's teaching them that lying down and relaxing is rewarding.
In the next tutorial, we'll build on this foundation and start introducing the movement that leads into the final Play Dead / Sleep position.
Have a go with your dog and let me know how they get on! ๐ถ
