๐ŸŽฌ Trick Training Mini-Series: Teaching Play Dead / Sleep
Step 1: The Settled Lie Down

Every great trick starts with a solid foundation, and before we teach Play Dead or Sleep, we need a relaxed, settled lie down.

Many dogs can perform a quick "down," but for these tricks we want them to be comfortable staying in position and relaxing their body. This makes the later stages much easier and clearer for the dog.

๐Ÿพ How to teach it:

โœ… Cue or lure your dog into a down.

โœ… Reward calmness and stillness.

โœ… Watch for your dog to naturally relax onto one hip or soften their posture.

โœ… Mark and reward the relaxed position.

โœ… Gradually build duration so your dog is happy remaining settled.

The goal isn't just getting your dog on the floor, it's teaching them that lying down and relaxing is rewarding.

In the next tutorial, we'll build on this foundation and start introducing the movement that leads into the final Play Dead / Sleep position.

Have a go with your dog and let me know how they get on! ๐Ÿถ

๐Ÿพ MYTH BUSTING: Positive Reinforcement Dog Training ๐Ÿพ

There's a lot of misinformation about positive reinforcement training. Let's bust some common myths! ๐Ÿ‘‡

โŒ Myth #1: Positive reinforcement means letting dogs do whatever they want.
โœ… Fact: Positive reinforcement teaches dogs what TO do by rewarding desired behaviours. Clear boundaries, consistency, and training are all part of the process.

โŒ Myth #2: Dogs trained with rewards only listen when food is involved.
โœ… Fact: Food is often used initially to teach behaviours, but rewards can be gradually faded and replaced with praise, play, life rewards, and real-world reinforcement. The goal is reliable behaviour, not dependency on treats.

โŒ Myth #3: Positive reinforcement training is too soft and doesn't work for difficult dogs.
โœ… Fact: Positive reinforcement is backed by science and is successfully used with dogs of all breeds, ages, and behavioural challenges. Building trust and motivation creates lasting results without fear or intimidation.

๐Ÿถ Training is about building communication, trust, and a strong relationship.

๐Ÿพ Cocos Training ๐Ÿพ

This week's training has been focused on real-world socialisation with coco. ๐Ÿถ

We've explored different environments, experienced new sights and sounds, discovered lots of interesting smells, and walked across a variety of surfaces. Every new experience has been introduced in a positive and rewarding way, helping to build confidence and resilience.

Socialisation isn't just about meeting other dogs, it's about helping your dog feel comfortable and confident in the world around them. Positive exposure to everyday situations can make a huge difference to how they cope with new experiences throughout their lives.

It's been fantastic to see her confidence grow with each new challenge! ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿพ Behind the Scenes This Week ๐Ÿพ

Health and welfare are a huge part of dog training, and it's important to make the right decision for each individual dog about whether training should go ahead.

This week has been too warm for the majority of our training sessions. However, we enjoyed a lovely early morning agility session on Thursday before the temperatures rose, along with a productive 1-1 consultation without the dog present.

During the consultation, we discussed how underlying health issues can affect a dog's behaviour and developed a training plan designed to achieve the best possible results while working alongside guidance from physiotherapists, vets, nutritionists, and pain specialists.

Training isn't always about teaching new skills. Sometimes it's about understanding what's right for each dog as an individual and ensuring their physical and emotional wellbeing comes first.

If you'd like to discuss your dog's specific training needs, please get in touch. Alternatively, follow our page to learn more about the training options we offer.

๐Ÿถ Your dog's welfare will always come first.

This week has been all about keeping our dogs safe in the heat, but that doesn't mean there haven't been plenty of successes to celebrate! โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿพ

It was lovely to receive this feedback about how our Trick Training Class has helped a working breed dog channel his energy in a positive and rewarding way. ๐Ÿ˜Š

We're so proud of the progress our teams make, and it's wonderful to be part of their training journey.

Well done, Team; we love having you in our classes! โค๏ธ

๐Ÿพ Understanding the Quadrants of Dog Training ๐Ÿพ

Dog training can feel overwhelming with so many opinions out there, but understanding the basics of learning theory can make a huge difference in how we communicate with our dogs.

There are 4 quadrants of dog training:
โž• Positive Reinforcement
โž– Negative Reinforcement
โž• Positive Punishment
โž– Negative Punishment

The word โ€œpositiveโ€ means something is ADDED, and โ€œnegativeโ€ means something is REMOVED. Reinforcement increases behaviour, while punishment decreases behaviour.

At the heart of our training is โœจ Positive Reinforcement โœจ rewarding behaviours we want to see more of using food, toys, praise, play, and real-life rewards.

Why do we love positive reinforcement?
๐Ÿถ Builds confidence
๐Ÿถ Strengthens your relationship
๐Ÿถ Encourages dogs to enjoy learning
๐Ÿถ Creates lasting behaviour without fear or intimidation
๐Ÿถ Makes training fun for both dog and owner

Dogs learn best when they feel safe, understood, and motivated. Training is about communication, teamwork, and trust. โค๏ธ

Every interaction is a learning opportunity, so letโ€™s make those experiences positive ones!

๐Ÿพ Cocos Training ๐Ÿพ

Today we did a little bit of wrapping work in the garden. Agility training isnโ€™t always about the equipment, itโ€™s about your dog understanding your cues and learning to work with what you have available.

We spent just 5 minutes practising wrapping around a plant pot. Wrapping is brilliant for helping dogs learn tight turns and improving their ability to work at a distance.

In our short session before it got too hot, I could already see better commitment to her turns. Well done, Coco ๐Ÿ’›
