One of our ex Training Daycare dogs, Mabel the Irish Setter, popped in for a play last week. She was officially here for grooming () , but as she hates the dryer we bathed her, and then let her play while she dried naturally.

Ive just received a fantastic update from one of my clients vet nurses. This shows the power of a multi-discipline team approach.
It also shows if you have the confidence to have a dialogue with your vet and work with a vet nurse, you can guide the process and advocate for your dog.
Lyra is groomed at home using cooperative care techniques and to hear that she has now gone and smashed it at the vets too makes me so happy 😊

Hi Laura,

I just wanted to give you a little update on how Lyra has been getting on in practice. She is making huge progress with her confidence, I have been doing lots of desensitisation work with the stethoscope and being handled....chin targetting has been very successful in helping her cope! The owners also successfully vaccinated her yesterday without the need for a muzzle. Myself and the vet were there for support outside the consult room door but the owners have got her to a point where they can inject her themselves, mitigating the need for excessive stress or muzzling.

We do still need to build on her confidence around other members of the team and hopefully eventually she will trust us enough to allow a full examine but we are definitely heading in the right direction! 😀

Welcoming the wonderful Emma to the team 🥰
The dogs and clients are all loving Emma's calm 'nothing phases me' attitude, and I am loving working so closely with another trainer!

Here is a bit about Emma:

My name is Emma Sims and I started grooming in 2023. I completed a Professional Styling Course at The Dog Academy in March 2025.

I am passionate about dog grooming, and building trusting relationships with the dogs and owners I work with.

Outside of grooming, Agility is my passion and I enjoy teaching at my own club, EJS Agility. This training background also sets me up well to work with anxious dogs, or dogs new to grooming. I can apply my training knowledge to the grooming sessions, helping the dogs become calm and confident in the grooming salon.

We had the lovely Birdie in the other week.
Birdie is anxious, but does need her nails clipping and her paws tidied up, for her own comfort.

So we are working on three trained behaviours to teach her
-relaxation
-stillness
-to be in a functional position that helps get the job done
-an element of consent (if she moves out of position that means break or im.not ready).
- through training, she understands the routine- I.e. there starts to be a predictable outcome

Working in this way means the training and later grooming is a two way conversation.

I am thrilled with the number of dogs we have helped in the last month. From mini dachshunds to newfoundland we have helped them on their grooming journey, whatever stage that may be.

Here is Buddy going in and out the bath, after having done handling and nail clip training, muzzle training and giving him a good brush. Buddy has been coming weekly for a while. He escalates to Biting quite quickly so ive worked very slowly with him, and now we trust one another much more. I even clipped his nails without a muzzle the other week. He will keep making progress if we can keep up the hard work.
