🌡️ HEATSTROKE IN DOGS: RAPID COOLING SAVES LIVES 🌡️

With temperatures soaring across the UK, it's a timely reminder that heatstroke is a veterinary emergency.

🚨 If you suspect heat-related illness:
💦 Get them wet, then straight to the vet!

Current evidence supports "Cool First, Transport Second." The longer a dog's body temperature remains elevated, the greater the risk of serious complications and death.

Recommended cooling methods

🌊 Cold Water Immersion
The most effective cooling method for suitable dogs.
✅ Best suited to:
• Conscious dogs
• Young and otherwise healthy dogs
• Dogs that can be safely supervised
⚠️ Important:
• Keep your dog's head above the water at all times
• Never leave them unattended
• Not usually recommended for brachycephalic breeds or dogs that become distressed in water

💨 Evaporative Cooling
The next best option if immersion isn't practical.
💧 Continuously wet the dog using cold water from a hose, shower, buckets or watering can.
🌬️ Combine with airflow from fans, air conditioning, or open windows and doors.

This method is particularly useful for:
• Brachycephalic breeds
• Elderly dogs
• Dogs with respiratory or cardiovascular disease
• Dogs unable to tolerate immersion

❌ Don't delay cooling while searching for "tepid" water.

Research has shown that concerns about cold water causing harmful vasoconstriction are unfounded. Cold water is the most effective cooling method available.

💧 Any water is better than no water, provided it is cooler than your dog's body temperature.

Don't forget

❌ Don't wrap your dog in wet towels or blankets – they can trap heat.
❌ Don't wait to see if your dog improves before contacting a vet.
❌ Don't delay cooling while arranging transport.

🌡️ If you are monitoring temperature, stop active cooling once it reaches approximately 39.5°C to reduce the risk of rebound hypothermia, then continue transport to your vet.

🐾 Early recognition and rapid cooling save lives.

Veteran Stanley is such an inspiration! At 13years young, he always gives his physiotherapy & hydrotherapy sessions his all 💪✨🫶. We usually start with gentle hydrotherapy in the underwater treadmill followed by some physiotherapy including laser therapy, massage, joint mobilisations and stretching. Then onto land based exercises such as 3 legged stands, cavaletti poles, sit to stands (squats like he is still a 2yr old! 🫶), gentle weaves, and resistance band exercises.

Always with a sparkle in his eye and ready for the next challenge 🩵🐶🩵.

It’s hard to believe this lovely girl was really nervous when she first started physiotherapy, just look how relaxed she is now! 🧘‍♂️🐶🥰💤

Esme has a number of aches and pains that we are working through and each session, she trusts our Veterinary Physiotherapist that bit more, knowing that she is constantly observing, listening, never rushing or forcing.
