‘Goose’ in Pastels on Pastelmat.

Her beautiful ears are such a unique feature that it was not only important to show her kind and gentle expression but also showcase those ears! As I was drawing her, I could see what a sweet nature she has.

Betsy’s Finished Portrait ❤️🐾

Luminance, Polychromos and a few Pablo Coloured Pencils on Pastelmat

Betsy is an adored family dog. She gives her family such joy and her face gave me joy as I drew her. I drew her eyes early on so had them gazing up at me throughout! How could you refuse this girl anything?!
Her portrait was gifted yesterday for Mother’s Day and I even got photos of her being unwrapped 🥰

Betsy the Cockapoo was gifted today! 💝

Here is how she gradually came together.
Pastels have become my go to but I really wanted to use coloured pencils to capture all her detail, curls and eyelashes. I used a variety of coloured pencils and loved the Luminance % colours for the subtle pinks, oranges, browns, blues and creams in her coat.

Her finished portrait to follow…..

I just noticed this…. 🥰 1111 Followers. Thank you, it means a lot to me that you’re showing an interest in my drawings!

Not a lot of time for drawing this week as it’s half term so we have been doing a few fun things. Swimming this morning and bowling later! The post restriction novelty still hasn’t worn off.

I can’t wait to get back drawing and should have something to share very soon. ✍️

Burtie the Greyhound in Pastels on Pastelmat.

To me this expression suggests such a genuine boy… those little clear eyes all alert and relaxed gazing up with his indicator ears in play. 😍.

I currently have a Boxer on the drawing board. I love the variety of dogs I get to draw.

‘Milo’ in stages.
Usually I build up a portrait image gradually but as Milo was a bigger portrait I decided to do his main features and then work to complete chunks at a time so that there was less chance of smudging. After doing his eyes and nose, I basically worked from top to bottom and from left to right. Oooh, I also use ClaireFontaine Crystal paper to help stop smudging too. It’s the paper that comes in between the pastelmat paper, but you can also buy it by itself.

Any fellow artists- how do you work? Do you build up the entire piece or work in sections? How do you try to body swerve the smudging?

‘Milo’ in Pastels on Pastelmat.

This portrait was gifted yesterday so I am safe to share it with you today!

I do love drawing Spaniels. Their features are beautiful and that Spaniel stare that says “you have all my attention, tell me what amazing adventure or snack we are having next” is irresistible.

I had a moment of panic when I couldn’t find my Dark Sepia (Faber Castel 122-175). Phew… found! Those of you who draw, do you have a number one go to pastel pencil or coloured pencil? I think my unsung hero is Creta Colour Dark Tan.

‘Topper’ the process…
I always start with the eyes. They are the windows to the soul aren’t they? They are what we look into when we look at our dogs or any portrait. Aesthetically, they are shiny and high contrast to draw. So on both counts, they are the most important part, plus once you have drawn them in you bring your portriat to life immediately. I hope you like these process drawings.

We are well and truly in the thick of the fuzzy in between days heading towards New Year and yesterday I got a lovely message and even a video to show how well the gift of ‘Topper’ was received! So lovely.

‘Topper’ the Springer Spaniel, in Pastels on Pastelmat
30 x 40cm

I love drawing a Spaniel, those eyes, luscious locks, spongey nose and to top it off, they asked me to include this red beret, which I think makes him seem quite festive!

‘Chewy’ the Shih Tzu in pastels on pastelmat
30cm x 30cm

So much character, so many eyelashes 😍 and such a different facial structure to most dogs I have drawn in the past. I was lucky to be given some beautiful photographs to work from. She was gifted on Christmas morning. 🎄
