Look at that colour! 😍 Eddie the Lagotto Romagnolo came in for his regular groom this week, and he’s looking absolutely stunning. Just look at that soft, creamy coat! We took him slightly shorter this time to keep him cool in the warmer weather. 🐾✨

That time of year again—grass seed season! 🌱🐾 While they might seem harmless, these tiny seeds can cause big problems for your dog. From between their toes to their ears and eyes, these little troublemakers can sneak in and cause serious discomfort. Watch as the vet explains the trauma they can cause! 🐕🚨

Max, the 6-month-old Border Collie pup, came in for his second ever groom with me last week! He’s getting a little more comfortable each time. Starting them young really helps build confidence and makes grooming a positive experience. As soon as they’re able to go out for walks is the perfect time to bring them in for their first puppy groom!

WHAT YOU DON'T SEE AT THE DOG GROOMERS.......
You dropped your dog off at the salon and picked them up few hours later - fluffy, fresh, and happy. But what you saw was just the tip of the iceberg.

You didn’t see your groomer arrive early to open up the salon, disinfect tools, lay out fresh towels, and check the day’s appointments. You didn’t see them look over your dog from nose to tail before even lifting a brush - checking the coat condition, skin, eyes, ears, nails, and weight.

You didn’t see the careful way they clipped around a wriggly paw, or how they paused to let your dog calm down during the bath. You didn’t notice the matting hidden beneath your dog’s topcoat, or the way the groomer worked slowly to avoid hurting the skin beneath it.

You weren’t there when they spotted a red patch of irritated skin, or a small lump you hadn’t noticed. You heard them gently mention it to you at collection - not to worry you, but because they genuinely care about your dog’s wellbeing.

And after you left, you didn’t see the clean-down , the floor swept, tables cleaned, blades oiled, messages replied to, notes written up for your next visit, and laundry on again.

All of that… for a price that’s often lower than what you’d pay for your own haircut. And your hairdresser?
They don’t have to bathe you, clip your nails, or hold you still while you try to bite the brush.

The truth is ……. dog grooming is so much more than a haircut.

It’s about health, hygiene, comfort, and trust. It’s about knowing dog anatomy, coat types, skin conditions, behaviour management, handling skills, and safe sc******ng techniques. It’s a profession that takes training, practice, and patience.
Most groomers got into this work because they love dogs. But that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be paid fairly for the physical, emotional, and skilled work they do every single day.

If your dog leaves their groomer happy, healthy and looking good - it’s not by luck. It’s because you have got a good groomer.
So next time, take a moment to thank them. Leave a review.

Tip them if you can. And above all - don’t undervalue them.
They’re doing far more than just washing the dog.

🐶🐾LET'S TALK ABOUT BRUSHING 🐾🐶
Brushing your dog between grooming appointments is so important for any breed, not just the poodle crosses.

Regular brushing not only prevents matts and tangles, but also promotes healthy skin and coat growth plus helps dogs regulate their body temperature better ✨

No groomer enjoys shaving a matted dog and the only reason they would shave was to avoid major discomfort and pain that would be caused to the dog by trying to work the tangles out of the coat. This can be prevented by regularly brushing your dog at home in between grooming appointments.

All you need to brush your dog at home are two tools - a slicker brush and a comb. (https://www.mutneys.com/shop/mutneys-slicker-brushes/). You can also use an Anti-Tangle Spray to help work through the tangled areas (https://www.mutneys.com/shop/anti-tangle-spray/) 💙

Here we have shared the recommended brushing amount for specific coat types:
🐶 Curly Coats - Everyday
These include Poodle Crosses & Bichon Frise.

🐶 Silky Coats - Everyday (if long) / Twice a Week (if short)
These include Spaniels & Shih-Tzu.

🐶 Double Coats - Twice a Week
These include Golden Retrievers, Collies, Huskies, German Shepherds.

🐶 Wire Haired - Once a Week
These include Border Terriers & Schnauzers

🐶 Smooth Coats - Once a Week
These include Pugs, Frenchies & Labs.

👉 TOP TIP: Have patience. The first time you brush your dog may be hard as the coat will probably be tangled / matted, but don’t worry it gets much easier! Always remember, the more often you brush, the easier it will be next time. Try and get into a routine and think about integrating brushing your dog into your daily life (i.e. whilst you’re waiting for the kettle to boil for example).

Happy brushing! Trust us, your dog will thank you 🙌
