So now things have settled down I have a few slots available over winter for freelance schooling. Please get in touch if you are needing some help keeping your four legged friend in work over these dark winter months. X

A beginner rider wants to work on intermediate horsemanship. An intermediate rider want to work on advanced horsemanship, but an advanced horseman works on the basics.

This is scarily true!
I know of so many people who come and try horses and expect them to walk trot canter, pop a jump, hack alone and in company and generally do anything asked.

Yes to some extent the horse should.

It shouldn't buck or rear or tank off - obviously there's a huge problem there.

But when things are less than perfect so many people will walk away...

Here's a few things to consider - the horse doesn't know you... he's trying to work YOU out.... through your nerves of riding a new horse, she must some how be that paragon of virtue.....

Yet he doesn't know your aids, isn't used to your energy, you have different balance to me, different length stirrups, softer or harder hands, quicker or slower expectations of the horses reaction to aids...

The horse in that trial will guess what you want, try to work out how to please you. Give them some time too... Time and basics are what build that Perfect Partnership you all want....

So next time you try a new horse - consider what the horse is going through.... its nerve wracking for you - and confusing for that horse.

Give that horse time, go back to the basics and you'll have more than you could ever have wished for....

(Stolen from someone else) but 100%!!

1st time ridden last night, so pleased with this little pony. The transformation in just 4 months is incredibly. Almost ready to move on to her new home 😘

Good girlies, 1st time saddles on. I'm really enjoying seeing these 2 learn and adapt to their new lives. Even though they are mother and daughter they are 2 totally different ponies and at different stages. The change from being in a field semi feral to fitting in up a yard is so interesting. They are presenting different responses to new experiences. I am eager every day to work with them and see them grow into little riding ponies.
Pepper the little coloured (daughter) is full of curiosity and fascination to her new world. Learning that there is more horses in the world other than her mother. Her main lessons are tying up, standing still and generally getting used to normal day to day life.
Juniper the bay roan (mother to pepper) has shone through like a diamond in the rough. From the bland not much to look at little brown scraggly thing that I 1st saw in the field she now makes me look twice. She has a lovely movement and carries herself nicely. she is proving herself to be a real sweetie. Lessons to be learned, to be caught! And to gain more trust in people. X

Riding and road safety lesson for our birthday girl Lola and Islay today.
Girls were learning how to use the road safely, hand signals and danger spots.
We ask all road users to be prepared and be respectful. Our country lanes have lots of blind bends. Anybody could be around them. Please please pass wide and slow and we will be very thankful 😘

My new projects!
Meet Juniper and Pepper. Mother and daughter.
Juniper is the bay roan, she is 13 years old. She has been driven and apparently ridden in her past but has stood in a field for the past 4 years.
Pepper is Junipers daughter, I would of thought her sire is a gypsy cob. She is 8 years old, not really been handled and unbroken.
I have taken on these two cuties as their owner who is 85 could not look after them any more. He is a lovely man and cared for his ponies very much, but just couldn't keep up with the hard work in looking after them and has struggled for the past 8 years. They we're knee deep in mud and muck and their feet are in much need of a farriers attention. They are on a immediate worming program to combat any infestations.
Juniper will come round quite quickly as she has had more handling in her life but still very nervous and unsure. Pepper is a complete blank canvas and very nervous but very inquisitive. Getting head collars on them took a bit of time and trust. And loading them was better than I thought. Juniper went straight up with a little hesitation and Pepper planted her feet completely baffled by what we wanted her to do, but she saw mum on board so she just needed time to process it. Luckily she is quite food driven so a bucket of nuts convinced her. 1 hour later they were on board and ready to start their new lives with us. They met the electric fencing and hopefully will learn to respect it. The farrier is coming Wednesday to tidy up their feet. Slowly slowly we will gain their trust and teach them what life is all about.

Getting back on track, it's been a hard winter with homeschooling and no turnout. Girls came off leadrein last year and progressed really well. Ponies being ponies and limited time we brought things back to simple hacks. But over the last few weeks we have got back in the school. I am really proud of the girls, they have picked up with where they left. Still got some adjustments to make with lolly's bitting and encourage Fleur's rythem. But all in all I'm pleased with them. We came out the other side, yay! Spring is almost upon us and we are excited about the year ahead, pony club here we come x
