Do you have a dog that takes part in sports like agility?

Adding in hydrotherapy, massage therapy or a combination of both may be the missing puzzle piece in keeping your sporting dog fit, strong and performing at their best. We know that musculoskeletal injuries are a huge reason for dogs needing to take time out from training, and complementary therapies can really reduce the risk of injuries occurring and also speed up recovery time 💪🏻

If you have a sporting dog, get in touch today and we can discuss how we can best support them! 🥰

Myth of the week - ‘it’s normal for my senior dog to slow down and become stiffer’ ❌

Whilst it may be more common to see senior dogs become slower and stiffer, it’s not necessarily normal and we don’t need to accept this as a ‘normal’ part of aging! Slowing down or stiffening may indicate an underlying condition such as arthritis, and we always encourage owners to speak to their vets if they notice these signs! Whilst it might happen as our dogs age, there’s so much we can do to improve these signs and enhance your senior dog’s quality of life! This can include massage therapy, hydrotherapy, physiotherapy with , lifestyle and environmental changes, and a proper pain management plan with your vet. We don’t need to see our senior dogs suffer as they age! 🩷

Bluebelle 💙
This sweet girl came back to see us after she had injured herself on a walk a few weeks ago! After a period of rest, her owners wanted to bring her back in for more regular sessions to keep her joints mobile, muscles strong and flexible, and build up her fitness levels again. She has taken to swimming really well and maintains a good swimming posture, and we are able to apply some manual techniques to work on some minor areas of tension and assymmetries! It was so lovely to hear how after just 1 session, they’d noticed some improvements already! 🥰
See you soon Bluebelle! 🥰🩵

Subtle signs of pain and discomfort in dogs which may indicate it's time for a vet check, and to consider adding in complementary therapies!
🐾 ‘Skipping' or 'hopping' during movement
🐾 Stiffness after rest or exercise
🐾 Becoming unusually grumpy with people or other dogs
🐾 Showing less interest in things they once enjoyed such as play
🐾 Slowing down on walks
These signs can often get passed off as 'old age' - however it may mean there is an underlying reason or your dog's musculoskeletal system is in need of extra support!

Post massage therapy session - what to expect!
💜 You may notice your dog is more tried after their session! Although it's not an intense workout for them, it can be tiring due to the mental stimulation during the appointment, but also due to the cellular effects of massage therapy - enhancing blood flow to the muscles, encouraging lymphatic drainage, and also promoting tissue healing! This is all tiring work for their body!
🩷 They may be thirstier than usual! For the same reason as above, their body may work harder after massage therapy due to increased circulation and lymphatic drainage, so it's normal to notice them drinking more post-massage!
💙 They may be a little stiffer/sore immediately afterwards- just as we sometimes feel a little bit sore after a sports massage, our dogs may feel the same before we notice the improvements!

Those puppy dog spaniel eyes 🥹

Did you know, just because you may have a breed that technically ‘should’ be quite a natural in water, it’s very common for them not to be! We see some labradors and spaniels that aren’t always sure at first - so don’t be disheartened if your dog doesn’t take to the water straight away! That’s why we are there - to support them, guide them, and make sure they have a positive experience 🥰

We will soon have BOTH the pool and treadmill available to offer hydrotherapy, so let’s dig into why each may be best suited for your dog!
🐾 The pool is great for arthritic dogs, as it provides a completely non-weight bearing environment. The pool is also fantastic for puppies, small to medium sized breeds, and for sporting and working dogs to build fitness and muscle mass 💪🏻
🐾 The treadmill is best suited for any dogs with neurological or spinal conditions, post surgery, and for larger breeds! If your dog is coming to us for fun & fitness swims we can also use the treadmill with advanced techniques if they prefer this to the pool!
We are so excited to be able to offer both modalities to you all! 💙

Top tips to enhance the benefits of your hydrotherapy and massage sessions:
❤️ Regular exercise between sessions! This one is super important if you’re trying to get your dog to lose some weight! Although a hydrotherapy session is amazing for achieving weight loss, if your dog isn’t regularly exercising in between sessions we probably won’t see much weight loss!
🩷 Multimodal approach - we can see amazing benefits from hydrotherapy in reducing pain and stiffness, but if your dog is still painful or uncomfortable it’s a good idea to work alongside your vet to form a pain management plan to keep their pain under control between sessions!
💛 Warm ups and cool downs - super important in sporting and working dogs, this can reduce the risk of injuries occurring in between treatment sessions! Simple things like exercising on lead before letting your dog off lead, or using heat packs before walks are a great idea!

For more information on how you can enhance the benefits of treatment, please feel free to ask us at your next appointment! 🥰

THREE alternatives to repetitive ball throwing that could really help your dog’s joints!
🐾 Hiding the ball and getting your dog to find it! This encourages your dog to use their nose and can be mentally stimulating for them whilst preventing those sharp turns and abrupt stops!
🐾 Practice impulse control around their ball - this is so hard for many dogs who are ball obsessed! Practicing keeping your dog in a sit or down and throwing the ball and then asking them to retrieve it is a fantastic game to play to work their brain and allow them to practice waiting!
🐾 Using a ball on a rope to engage with your dog - this can help with building a bond through play whilst dogs use their natural instincts to play tug! This can also be a fantastic way to practice their ‘drop’ command.
Balls can be so great for training and play with your dog but we want to focus on reducing those really high speed chases, sharp turns, and skidding to catch the ball, which can all place extra pressure through the joints and increase the risk of injury! If you try any of these ideas please tag us in your stories so we can share 😍

‘My dog is healthy and not lame so they don’t need hydrotherapy or massage therapy!’ - this is one of the biggest myths out there!

Introducing massage therapy or hydrotherapy can be one of the easiest ways to keep your dog healthy, strong, and prevent any musculoskeletal issues occurring! The added benefit of starting before any issues occur is that it anything were to happen as they age, they are already habituated to the centre, us and treatment 🐾 This makes for a smoother transition into treatment and less stress for you and your pup.
