🐾✨ Let’s Talk Breed Fulfilment! ✨🐾
Your dog isn’t just a pet — they’re a unique mix of instincts, drives, and history. 🧬🐶
Understanding what they were originally bred to do helps us meet their needs and bring out the best in them — mentally, physically, and emotionally. 💛

Every breed (or mix!) has natural behaviours still living inside them today — even if they’re snoozing on your sofa 🛋️

Swipe through the slides to discover what fulfilment looks like for your dog’s breed group:

🎯 Working Group – Powerhouses who need structure, purpose, and proper training
🐕 Herding Group – Highly intelligent dogs who thrive with focus and daily tasks
💖 Toy Group – Little companions with big personalities who crave connection
👃 Hound Group – Natural hunters who love to sniff, chase, and explore
🎾 Sporting Group (Gundogs) – Friendly, energetic breeds who love retrieving and water play
🌲 Non-Sporting (Utility) Group – A unique mix with one thing in common: they need something to do
🏙️ Companion/Mixed Breeds – Modern dogs with big hearts, brains, and versatile needs

➡️ Find the slide with your dog’s breed or type — and comment below if you have any questions about fulfilling their specific needs! 🐾💬

Giving your dog the right outlets = better behaviour, a happier home, and a stronger bond between you both 💫🐶

🐾 Training Tip Tuesday 🐶✨
“Reward good behaviour, not just obedience!”

When we think about training, we often focus on commands like “sit,” “stay,” or “come.” But here’s the truth: your dog is showing good behaviour all the time — and rewarding those moments can make a huge difference. 💡

✅ Is your dog calmly lying down while you work?
✅ Walked past another dog without barking?
✅ Did the door bell ring and they didn't bark the house down?
✅ Chose to look at you instead of chasing a squirrel?

👏 Reward that! With praise, treats, or even just a happy “good girl/boy!”
Why? Because dogs learn best when they understand what we like. Reinforcing calm, polite behaviour in everyday moments builds stronger habits and better bonding than just drilling commands.

💬 Consistency + positivity = a confident, well-behaved pup.

🐾 Choosing the Right Dog Trainer? Here’s What to Look For! 🐶

Finding a dog trainer can feel overwhelming — there are so many options out there! But not all trainers are created equal. Here’s what to check before you trust someone with your dog’s learning (and happiness):

🐾Proven Professional Experience — Look for trainers who have worked with dogs outside their own, their friends’, or their family’s pets. Real professional experience means handling a wide range of dogs, personalities, and behaviours.

🐾Success With Your Specific Challenges — Whether it’s reactivity, loose-lead walking, or puppy basics, make sure they have a track record of helping dogs (and owners!) through the exact issues you’re facing.

🐾Uses Positive, Ethical Methods — Training should build trust, not fear. Avoid anyone who relies on intimidation or outdated techniques.

🐾Transparent About Their Training Style — Good trainers are happy to explain how they work and why they do things a certain way.

🐾 Ongoing Education — The dog world is always evolving! Great trainers keep learning and updating their methods based on the latest science.

🐾 Insured & Collaborative — A reputable trainer will be fully insured and focused on working with you, not just training your dog in isolation. You should feel supported, informed, and part of the process every step of the way.

Remember: you’re not just picking a trainer — you’re picking a partner to help shape your dog’s future. Choose wisely, and it'll make all the difference. ✨

🌟 Feedback Friday 🌟

Meet Rex—a German Shepherd x Belgian Malinois who began his training journey anxious, reactive and hyper-alert. With a tailored approach and consistent support, he’s made remarkable progress toward becoming a more relaxed and confident loving pup. 🐾💛

🗓️ Since the 1st of April, I’ve had the pleasure of working closely with Rex and his dedicated family. When they first reached out, they were simply hoping for a little improvement—but together, we've achieved so much more.

In just over two months, Rex has gone from being constantly on edge and reactive to showing a calmer, more balanced side. From our very first conversation, it was clear what was going on, and we built a plan specifically designed to meet his needs. That personalised approach has been key to helping him grow in confidence and find calm in his world.

His family admitted they were unsure at first—given his breed mix, they weren’t sure anyone could truly help. But with patience, trust, and teamwork, we’ve shown just how much potential he has and that we never give up on dogs that need help!

🧡 Here’s what they had to say (check out the full review in the photo!)

👉 “We just want to say a massive thank you to Cara and her team for everything…”

It’s been an honour to be part of Rex’s journey—and I’m so excited to continue working with him as he progresses even further.

📩 If you're looking for expert, one-to-one support with your dog, we're here to help—no matter where you're starting from.

🐶 Is Your Dog Feeling Stressed? Look Out for These Signs! 🐾

Our dogs can’t say “I’m stressed,” but they do give us clues. If your pup has been acting a little out of sorts, here are some signs they might be feeling overwhelmed:

🔹 Lip licking (when there’s no food)
🔹 Pacing or constant restlessness
🔹 Pulling on the lead like a freight train
🔹 Nonstop barking
🔹 Reactivity to people, dogs, or noises
🔹 Not eating their food/ refusing treats
🔹 “Not listening” or seeming zoned out
🔹 Paw biting or excessive self-licking
🔹 Ears pinned back or cowering or tucked tail

Stressed dogs aren’t bad dogs—they’re just trying to cope. The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone. 🧡

✨ At Cara’s Canines, I offer 1:1 training support tailored to your dog’s needs—whether it’s stress, reactivity, or just finding calm on a walk again. Together, we’ll build confidence, trust, and that happy-dog energy you love.

‼️KEEP YOUR DOGS INDOORS‼️
if you want to know what to look out for and what to do with suspected heat stroke - keep reading!!

Weather above 24 degrees is too hot for your dog to be outside (this includes walking, gardens, parks, picnics, pubs).
❗️DO NOT walk your dog when temp is above 24 degrees, no do has ever died from missing a walk!!
❗️DO NOT leave your dog in attended in the garden- they should only go out for short intervals to go to the toilet!!

Here’s what you should do with your pup when it’s over 24 degrees:

🔆 give them cooling enrichment such as:
- ice cubes
- freeze water and some food in a kong
- frozen carrots
- frozen cucumber
🔆 get a cooling coat or mat
🔆use fans or ac units
🔆keep blinds shut
🔆put small bits of their food in their water to ensure they drink more
🔆 no excessive exercise

What you look out for/ signs of heat stroke:
❌excessive drooling
❌excessive panting
❌lethargy
❌vomiting
❌diarrhoea
❌seizures
❌increased heart rate
❌red or purple tongue and gums
❌glassy eyes
❌collapsing or staggering

What to do if you suspect heat stroke:
✅move your dog to a cool area
✅poor COOL (NOT cold or freezing) water over the dogs BODY (NOT head)
✅let when take SMALL amounts of water
✅call your vet ASAP - even if your dog looks better

Keep an eye on your dog, do not let them roam in and out of the house as they will lay in the heat for too long, keep them indoors and bring them out for SHORT intervals to go to the toilet.

Please be responsible and keep your dog safe.

33 degrees tomorrow?!☀️

Just a quick reminder as the week gets hotter to please only take your dog outside during the early morning or late evening when it is cooler.

❌No dogs should be outside when temperature is above 23 degrees due to high risk of heat stroke.

‼️Puppies, brachycephalic and elderly dogs should not be outside above 21 degrees due to higher risk of heat stroke.

🚫Outside activities that should not take place at these temperature includes laying in the garden in the sun for more that 30min at a time, playing outside inc garden/ park, walks, picnics with your dog etc

🔥If you touch the pavement and can feel the heat within 10 seconds it is too hot for your dogs feet!

❄️Things to keep your dogs cool:
- Cool mats. can get these from pets at home, Argos or Amazon
- Ice cubes. Give them ice cubes to lick, eat and play with
- Keep them indoors. No dog has ever died from staying indoors in a well ventilated room; many have from heat stroke
- Do NOT keep them in a car
- Keep their water supply topped up
- Frozen carrots are great!
- Fill a kong with water and bits of their food and freeze it

🐶Keep up their napping routine and still cover the crate over (do not tuck it under and leave gaps for ventilation at the bottom like normal) so they still get their sleep - remember a sleeping dog is a happy dog!

Dogs wont tell you when they are too hot, it’s our job to protect and keep them cool. Keep training indoors or early morning/ late evening and have fun but please keep them in your mind and safe, cool and happy☺️

Any questions are always welcome,

🚪What does your dog do when you open the door?

If the answer is anything but stays far away from the open door, you need some door control in your life.

Door control is a fantastic tool to make sure your pup is protected and safe whenever that front door opens. Having a solid place command can definitely help make this piece of training so much easier too!
