A Message from Pet Aqua & the Future of Chatham High Street
We need to talk about parking charges — again.
Medway Council has raised car parking charges once more, and frankly, we've had enough. Local high street businesses — including us here at Pet Aqua — sat down with Medway Council to make our voices heard.
We laid out the reality of what these charges do to footfall, to trade, to the survival of independent shops, cafés and businesses. They listened. And then they went ahead and raised them anyway.
Let's be honest: the high street has never had a worse reputation than it does right now. And it's no surprise. While the council ploughs thousands of pounds into regeneration schemes with one hand, it quietly strangles the very businesses that give the high street its heartbeat with the other. Business rates — another archaic burden that Labour themselves pledged to abolish before the election, calling them outdated and unfit for purpose — have gone up yet again. So much for that promise.
We are not in an easy position. No independent business is. But we refuse to simply watch our loyal, brilliant customers get punished for choosing to support us in person rather than clicking a button online.
So here's what we're doing — and what we're hoping businesses on the high street may also consider the same or similar
From now at Pet Aqua, spend £20 or more in-store and show us proof of your parking ticket, and we will give you £1 back. It's not a fortune. We'll be the first to admit that. But it's something. It's our way of saying: we see you, we appreciate you, and your loyalty matters to us.
More importantly, this is just the start of an idea. If local shops and businesses come together and offer the same or similar redemption scheme, the numbers begin to add up. A customer visiting several high street stores in one trip could potentially cover the full cost of their parking — and perhaps a little more.
Suddenly, coming into Chatham becomes worthwhile again. That's the goal.
We're putting the call out today: let's get together as a high street community and build something that protects our customers and our livelihoods.
If you believe in independent shops, in community, and in standing up to decisions that simply don't make sense — please share this post. The more noise we make together, the harder we are to ignore.
And we would genuinely love to hear your thoughts. Drop a comment below — customers, fellow business owners, residents. All views are welcome. This conversation needs to happen.
We're Pet Aqua. We're here. And we're not going anywhere without a fight.
