Sadly it is just a little over a week until Isle Valley Equine Clinic closes its doors.

We understand there are some concerns over clients being able to get their horse's clinical history sent to their new vet after the 29th. We can confirm the small animal team will be able to support with this, so if you need any history sending or invoices paying after the 29th, please contact the Stoke team on 01935 310930.

UNFORTUNATELY WE WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO SUPPLY X-RAYS AND SCANS UP UNTIL WEDS 27th JULY SO PLEASE CONTACT US AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IF YOU NEED THESE.

We thank you for your continued support and hope to see as many of you as possible next Friday afternoon.

We would like to thank our clients for your support during this difficult time and wish you all the very best in the future.

The answer is all of them! There are numerous plants which are poisonous to horses if ingested, such as these 6:

A: Ragwort
B: Deadly Nightshade
C: Buttercups โ€“ A horse would have to eat a very large amount to become seriously ill. They are also considered harmless once dried in hay.
D: Foxglove
E: Rhododendron
F: Bracken

Maintaining a good pasture is essential in minimising the risk of exposure to these toxic plants. It is really important to regularly check your horseโ€™s paddock. Removing these plants will prevent your horse from ingesting them.

The Countryside Code allows everyone to enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits that nature offers, while giving it the respect it deserves.

Key changes to the Countryside Code include:

New advice for people to โ€˜be nice, say hello, share the spaceโ€™ as well as โ€˜enjoy your visit, have fun, make a memoryโ€™

A reminder not to feed livestock, horses or wild animals

To stay on marked footpaths, even if they are muddy, to protect crops and wildlife

Clearer rules for dog walkers to take home dog poo and use their own bin if a there are no public waste bins

A refreshed tone of voice, creating a guide for the public rather than a list of rules โ€“ recognising the significant health and wellbeing benefits of spending time in nature

New wording to make clear that the code applies to all our natural places, including parks and waterways, coast and countryside

On behalf of all my colleagues at the Isle valley Equine Clinic, I should like to say that we very much regret the closure of the Clinic. It was a decision made entirely by VetPartners.
We would like to thank all our loyal clients for their unwavering support. Neither Pam nor I are leaving the area so please keep in touch.

Managing hormonal mares
Any mare that is cycling normally can have hormonal behaviour and it may not be related to a clinical problem. Mares are seasonal breeders. Most of their cyclic behaviour and desire to breed occurs in spring. A mareโ€™s
cycle lasts 21 days and is influenced by a variety of hormones released by the brain and the ovaries. The cycle begins the day of ovulation; the first 16 days are mainly under the influence of the hormone progesterone. From day 17-21 the level of progesterone decreases and the hormone oestrogen increases. Oestrogen causes much of the โ€˜in-seasonโ€™ or oestrus behaviour. This phase of the cycle should last approximately 5 days, however it can vary between mares, the time of the year, or if there is a clinical problem.
Here is a video of the clinical signs that are often attributed to hormonal mares. If you suspect that your mare may have a hormonal problem, please call us on 01460 6609 to discuss your individual case with a veterinary surgeon and to discuss the best option for your mare.

Care of the new-born foal
The equine species has adapted to move as soon as possible
after birth and to exhibit few outward signs of disease to cope
with life surrounded by potential predators. This makes close
monitoring of foals essential for the first 24 hours of life and
early veterinary intervention important if there is any concern.
Here is a video with some points to remember with a new-born
foal.
