Some time ago—at least a few months back—we received a phone call from Sarah. Sarah was from way up north, and I mean way up north… Scotland, in fact.
She was looking for a horse with the potential to show, as that was her and her daughter’s favourite pastime.
As many of our horses have had injuries, blemishes, or behavioural issues, we weren’t able to match her with anything suitable at the time. However, we kept her details on file in case the right horse came along.
The very next day, we received a call from Devon. Without going too deeply into the whys and wherefores, a 12-year-old horse urgently needed our help.
Why the urgency? After speaking to the elderly owner, it became clear that he no longer wanted the horse and said he would have him shot if we didn’t step in, as he couldn’t be bothered with him anymore.
A 12-year-old chestnut, good to ride and handle, good with geldings, and with no health issues—so why would he be difficult to rehome? Because he was a stallion.
To cut a long story short, within five days he was on Gillie’s transport and whisked up to Scotland, where his new family gave him a very warm welcome.
He’s now started lessons and is proving to be a little darling in everything that’s asked of him—which is no small achievement for a horse that has never done anything like it before.
We wish Reuben a long, happy life in Scotland and hope to see him strutting his stuff in the show ring very soon.
