Following on from our recent post about Roddy's student exchange days in Minnesota and the visit from Dr Tom Sautter and Dr Linda Sifford, who helped shape his early interest in dairy practice, we had another very special transatlantic reunion at Dunmuir Veterinary Group.
All the way from Mahaska Veterinary Clinic in Oskaloosa, Iowa, U.S.A. 🇺🇸, we were delighted to welcome Dr Teresa Carmichael to our annual DVG BBQ and farm client gathering.
Teresa was in the same year group as Roddy when he was an exchange student before qualifying as a vet. It was wonderful to catch up, reminisce, and share stories from both sides of the Atlantic.
It was also another lovely reminder of the lasting value of student exchanges. They create far more than academic opportunities. They build friendships, broaden horizons, encourage collaboration, and help us understand how people live and work in other parts of the world.
Over the years, Roddy and Teresa have continued to compare and contrast veterinary practice in rural Scotland and rural Iowa. Different countries, different systems, and different challenges at times but plenty of shared experiences when it comes to supporting farmers, caring for animals, and serving rural communities.
From mentors in Minnesota to friends from Iowa visiting Dunmuir years later, these connections show just how powerful student exchange programmes can be. They build understanding, goodwill, and professional links that can last a lifetime.
Thank you for making the trip, Teresa. It was a real pleasure to have you with us. 🐾🐄
