Building trust with a Rottweiler can be hit and miss. Especially if you’re outside their “circle”.

You may have seen the mainstream media reporting on dog attacks recently.

Most common statement I hear in response is “it’s not the dog, it’s the way they’re brought up” and it’s a damning and wildly inaccurate retort to pedal.

Sometimes, not always, but more so than you know, genetics play an enormous part in your dogs demeanour and temperament. Not just phenotype. And not just how you bring them up!

Knowing what is ‘behind’ your dog is an enormous asset if you have that privilege.

Good breeding is absolutely key.

Sniffing for most dogs = life and primary sense.

However, it is not a replacement for quality physical exercise and maintenance of health, wellbeing and fitness.

They’re not mutually exclusive of course, but dogs need both.

“Ten minutes of sniffing is equivalent to an hour of exercise”.

I can see where people are coming from but it isn’t. Scentwork is important for all breeds for various genetic and holistic reasons but it isn’t equivalent to quality physical exercise.

My dogs need both, so they will get both. My commitment to them for selecting them to live with me.

What is an accredited dog trainer or behaviourist?

In the main, a paid up membership, letters and slogans in a signature block/website and a shed load of bragging right.

Questions relating to experience should be your first port of call. As well as up to date testimonials, stories of success and reviews of good trainer/client relationships are key.
