HOW MUCH DOES A WALK COST? 💸
It's the subject us pet businesses all dread to talk about... Pricing.
We all know the emotional attachment we have to our pets, so somehow talking about money when providing a service for other peoples pets feels a bit icky
But it really shouldn't be...
This is a business just like any other. And just like any other business, we have to make a fair living for what is a tough job.
My hourly rate for a solo 1-2-1 dog walk is £20. Your pet gets an hour of my un-divided attention, and that's the only income I receive for that hour
Now some people may read and think I don't get paid £20, so why should you?
Well I actually don't get paid that 😂
Let me break down what that £20 actually includes (aside from paying myself):
➡️Travel costs (car, insurance, petrol, tax etc...)
➡️Travel Time (which adds another 20/30 mins onto that hour)
➡️Business Insurance
➡️Equipment - leads, treats, poo bags etc...
➡️Ongoing Training and Development
➡️Admin hours
➡️Tax & NI
➡️Holiday and Sick Pay
And as my fellow solo dog walkers will know, we are lucky if we fit in 5-6 hour long walks per day. So I may be charging £20 per hour, but realistically I'm earning about £12-£13 ph for a 7/8 hour day of work.
I do also feel there is sometimes an unfair comparison between solo walk prices and group walk prices....
In all honesty I think we'd all prefer our dogs to be out socialising with other dogs, but in reality that just isn't possible for all dogs.
But let's say a business charges between £12-£15 per dog for an hours group walk, and they take 5/6 dogs out a time. That's up to £90 for that one hour walk, compared to £20 for mine.
Now i'm not trying to say for one minute group walkers are overcharging, there are more overheads they have to contend with, and they take on the added responsibility of safely managing large groups of dogs in public too.
The price is the price for a reason...
So next time you see a dog walker's hourly rate, please remember there are numerous overheads that rate covers and we all deserve a fair wage for doing a difficult and risky job...
