An urgent appeal has been launched to save 350 ex-commercial hens in Lancashire from slaughter. 🐔
The British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) is calling on animal lovers to give a retired hen a home and a second chance at life. The 18-month-old hens, previously commercial layers, face being culled if they are not rehomed by 2pm on Friday, April 10.
A rehoming event will take place in Greenhalgh on Saturday where the hens can find safe, loving retirement homes. Friendly, curious, and easy to care for, the birds can also reward their keepers with occasional fresh eggs.
Andy Hill, from the BHWT, said: "People are often surprised by how much joy hens bring. They’re funny, curious little characters, they love routine, and they’re genuinely a delight to care for.
"Plus, they’re still more than happy to pop out the occasional egg. The last time we rehomed in Lancashire it was a massive success – we just need one more push to help these hens find forever homes too.
"With spring finally here, this is the ideal time to start. These girls are more than ready for a fresh beginning, and they really do make wonderful pets." 🙏
