A well-stocked Equine First Aid Kit is an essential item in every tack room, trailer or lorry. We suggest that a First Aid Kit should include:
• Sterile non-stick dressings
• Cotton Wool
• Bandaging material
• Poultice material
• Silver tape
• Scissors
• Anti-bacterial wash
• Wound gel
• Thermometer

Many wounds only require simple first aid in order to treat them, though more serious ones will require veterinary attention. Arming yourself with some basic first aid knowledge and a suitable first aid kit will enable you to treat minor wounds effectively yourself. This will aid healing and reduce the risk of infection. You will also be better equipped to assess more serious wounds and provide initial treatment whilst waiting for the vet.

As the rules around COVID-19 start to relax in the UK, we are all very aware of what we need to do in order to minimise the risk of the virus spreading. Similarly, as we now start to travel to events and competitions with our horses, it’s really important that we consider what we should be doing to minimise the risk of spreading infectious equine diseases such as equine influenza, strangles and EHV. Good biosecurity is key and here are some basic measures you can take to help:
Before the event:
• Ensure that your horse’s vaccinations are up-to-date
• Do not take your horse to an event or off the yard if they, or another horse on the yard, is suspected of having, or is diagnosed with, an infectious disease

At the event:
• Don’t share water/feed buckets or equipment/tack
• Avoid nose to nose and close contact with other horses
• Ensure good hand hygiene measures between handling or touching other horses
• Take your own water supply
• Social distancing measures can help prevent the spread of infectious diseases in horses as well as people!

After the event:
• Monitor your horse for signs of infectious disease
• Horses that have attended an event where they may have been exposed to an infectious disease should be isolated/quarantined – speak to your vet for advice

Please do get in touch if you would like further information about biosecurity, not only for the travelling horse but also measures you can take for new arrivals and for your yard as a whole.

Weighing your horse
It’s important that we know the weight of our horse, not only to ensure that we give the correct dose of medicines and wormers, but also to monitor whether their weight is changing over time. This is particularly important in the spring and summer when the fresh grass can easily cause weight gain, which can lead to a number of health problems. Few of us have regular access to a weigh bridge for an accurate measurement of weight, so what can we do instead?
• Although not 100% accurate, weigh tapes can be a useful tool to monitor weight gain/loss over time if the same tape is used consistently and in the same way & position each time. Weigh tapes are readily available to purchase online, are relatively inexpensive and should be a tack room essential.
• Body condition scoring measures the amount of stored fat on a horse’s body. When used in conjunction with a weigh tape, this can provide a good indication of whether or not your horse is a healthy weight. Body Condition Scoring charts are available free of charge online or we can supply you with one on request.
Our vets are always happy to give advice on a suitable weight for your horse or pony and, of course, help you to put together an appropriate diet plan should they need to gain or lose a few pounds! Just give us a call.

Spring grass and laminitis
This year, more than ever, most of us will be breathing a sigh of relief now that spring is upon us, the weather is getting warmer and the days are longer. However, along with the delights of spring comes an increased risk of laminitis for our horses. Head over to this blog from the Horse Health Programme about the link between spring grass and laminitis and what you can do to reduce the risk.
If you have any concerns that your horse may be showing signs of laminitis, it’s important that you contact us as soon as possible.
