There has been a case of BTV-3 confirmed in Ceredigion, after a cow gave birth to a โdummy calfโ. Both cow and calf were positive. This disease passes to animals via infected midges, which are active again after the warm spell!
The clinical symptoms of BTV-3 to watch out for are:-
๐ Sheep- High fever, drooling, and painful ulcers or erosions on the lips, gums, and tongue.
Swelling of the lips, tongue, head, and neck. The tongue can become severely swollen and, in some cases, turn blue
Inflammation and reddening of the coronary band (where skin meets the hoof). Animals might be stiff, reluctant to move, and arch their backs.
Heavy nasal and eye discharge,
๐ Cattle- Crusted erosions around the nostrils and muzzle, a redness to the mouth, nose, and eyes.
Reddening of the skin just above orbetween the hooves, and sometimes crusty erosions on the teats.
Sudden lethargy, loss of appetite, and a severe, temporary drop in milk yield.
Can cause abortions, stillbirths, and calves born weak, blind, or deformed
