UK milk production continues to fall, with GB milk volumes now around 3% lower than this time last year. Tighter milk supplies have strengthened the UK market, pushing up cream, spot milk and cheese values, and a number of processors have announced milk price increases for August and September.
While market sentiment is improving, many milk prices still remain below the cost of production. Commodity markets have shown more positive than negative movement over recent weeks, although high butter stocks continue to hold that market back.
The outlook is cautiously optimistic, with expectations that milk prices will continue to improve over the coming months. However, further price increases will be needed to support farm profitability and maintain milk production across the industry.
What this means for your farm?
With grass growth remaining challenging across much of the UK, farmers are currently supplementing grazing with buffer feeding, whether through a full TMR, forage only, or a part-day grazing and housing system. Now is the critical time to ensure all diets are correctly balanced for energy and protein, while supplying enough daily forage dry matter and fibre to help maintain peak rumen performance.
