The prevalence of lameness in horses with back pain was 74%, and back problems were diagnosed in 32% of the lame horses. (Landsman et al, 2004)

In equine orthopaedics there is a strong association between lameness and back pain. If you know, you know…

If you are having performance related problems with your horse don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Just a quick message to all my wonderful clients to say thank you for your business in 2025 and also your patience whilst I work through all my messages over the last few weeks.

2025 flew by and it hasn’t stopped.

The run up to Christmas was extremely busy and January 2026 seems to be the same.

If you’re waiting to hear from me give me a little nudge, your message has probably just been bumped down the WhatsApp list.

People want their horses fixed and I’m trying my best to get around you all as soon as possible but it’s just me and I only have one pair of hands.

1. Going forward I will be prioritising my specialist work. Lameness and poor performance investigations, orthopaedic therapies, surgeries and prepurchase examinations will take precedence.

2. I will continue to do all aspects of equine work but there will probably be a wait on routine work so please book this well in advance.

3. This year I am taking on some help with running the business which should help with smoother running of the day-to-day and free me up some more clinical time.

4. Just a reminder that appointments are all pay at the time. Cash, Bacs or card. I don’t have time for chasing. Medication will not be sent out or available to collect until paid for.

Happy New Year

Spring is just around the corner. We are probably all looking forward to longer days. Please get in touch if you need your horse in tip-top condition coming into Spring.

🙌 I have successfully recertified as a specialist with the European College of Veterinary Surgeons for another 5 years. A lot of hard work and time alongside the daily clinical work to maintain the highest standards of surgical expertise available for the treatment of my large animals patients.

As a board-certified ECVS diplomate in Equine surgery and lameness, I have been asked, how is a Specialist different from your usual vet?
Advances in medical knowledge mean it is not possible for a vet to be an expert in every field.
There are times when your horse's problem is best dealt with by a Specialist who has many years of training and experience in a particular area, such as lameness and surgery.

If you require my specialist services please do not hesitate to get in contact.

I attended a great course on Advances in Equine Orthopaedic Therapies in the Black Forest, Germany by VetPD - Veterinary Professional Development. It covered every aspect of orthopaedic therapies from steroid/cortisone through to regenerative treatments and even orthopaedic/sport horse surgeries including kissing spine, suspensory ligament and tendon sheath surgery. It was the perfect course to compliment my clinical work - specialising in equine lameness, surgery and sports horse poor performance.

I’m excited to offer some new therapies. There was a big focus on really understanding what’s happening in joint pathology to ensure the right therapies are chosen and that is where the benefit of having specialist knowledge and good diagnostic imaging can really help. Having conversations with colleagues about certain therapies such as Arthramid polyacrylamide gel to see what their experiences have been like has been eye-opening. It has been sold as a bit of a ‘silver bullet’ for joint arthritis in the uk and is used a lot a lot on the continent. I like it too but I’ve seen a lot of horses treated only with it and the results have been suboptimal (hence they come to me for a second opinion). Knowing how to deal with these suboptimal responses to therapies will really improve soundness outcomes.

If you’re having lameness or poor performance issues with you horse don’t hesitate to get in touch.

The diary is open again for the next 3-4 weeks in the run up to Christmas.

If you’re waiting to hear back from me, I’m working through messages and emails but feel free to give me a nudge.

UK VETS UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR OVER CHARGING

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating the UK veterinary sector because of concerns that vet practices are overcharging horse and pet owners.

The investigation actually started back in September 2023 into potential market issues like a lack of price transparency and high prescription costs - where customers can easily buy prescriptions far cheaper outside of their vet practices.

Proposed measures to address this include requiring more price transparency on vet websites, creating a price comparison website, and capping prescription fees at around £16.

Average prices in the sector have increased by 63% between 2016 and 2023, which significantly outpaces UK inflation rates.

The investigation is pushing for price transparency to customers. At the moment many practices do not publish comprehensive price lists, and owners are often unaware of costs until after a service is agreed upon.

The investigation is overtly aware of a lack of competition in the UK veterinary sector and the associated risk of the large vet chains charging more than the small independant practices in a sector that is worth £6 billion in the UK.

At the moment the UK vet sector is dominated by large corporate groups, leading to concerns that competition is weak, particularly in areas with multiple practices owned by the same company.

The investigation has revealed a practice of vastly overcharging for prescriptions. Some practices are reportedly selling medicines for 3 to 4 times the purchase cost, and owners are often unaware they can get prescriptions from their vet to buy medication elsewhere.

The investigation is deeply concerned at the profits that the UK Vet Sector is making. It found that for a substantial part of the market, profits are believed to be much higher than they should be if competition was working well.

The CMA is expected to publish its final decision by March 2026, with some of the proposed changes potentially coming into effect as early as the end of 2025.
