A little compassion goes a long way 💭
My human doesn’t understand…(Written by This Irish Cob Can).
My human doesn’t understand,
The pain that this move brings.
My gullet squeezed in so tight,
I’m coiled up like a spring.
This pressure from the bit,
Is all too much to bare,
I try to resist with all my strength,
But the reins go tighter, without a care.
My neck begins to ache,
My mouth it does get sore.
I open my mouth to seek relief,
This ‘frame’ is more than a chore.
My tongue becomes so fussy,
I try to evade this pain,
But my human brings out their gadgets,
My heart sinks lower, once again.
A noseband and a flash,
Tied tightly as can be,
My human isn’t listening,
I do more so they hear my plea.
I say I won’t go forward,
I buck and shake my head.
I’m trying to tell my human,
But they’re angry at me instead.
The situation escalates,
The whip it does appear.
Spurs are also now insight,
My plea turns in to fear.
I finally feel defeated,
I give in to these requests.
I do the things my human asks,
With my chin almost on my chest.
These bones and muscles will break,
And I wait for that time to come.
But ‘till then I’ll carry on,
Until my body is finally done.
My human doesn’t understand,
That this frame is oh so wrong.
I can only hope my human learns,
So I can be happy, relaxed and strong.

Rolkur and/or significantly behind the vertical is not okay. We need to do right by our horses. Thank you to The Cob Diaries for chipping in with one of the verses.
Let’s PREVENT this from being normalised. Just because the FEI have altered rules surrounding the topic, doesn’t mean it’s now okay.
Image credited to ‘how to dressage’, which is part of a very good article they did on this very topic of Rolkur.
