World Arthritis Day: Caring for Cats with Arthritis
Did you know that arthritis affects up to 90% of cats over the age of 12? 🐾 Just like humans, our feline friends can suffer from the painful degeneration of their joints, known as osteoarthritis. It’s a progressive condition, where the cartilage that cushions the joints wears down, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.
Here’s what to look for in your cat:
• 🐾 Difficulty jumping or climbing stairs
• 🐾 Reduced grooming (especially around their back)
• 🐾 Limping or stiffness after resting
• 🐾 Irritability or changes in behavior
What can we do to help?
• Veterinary care: Speak with your vet about anti-inflammatory medications or supplements like glucosamine.
• Weight management: Keep your cat at a healthy weight to reduce pressure on their joints.
• Home adjustments: Add ramps or steps to help them access favorite spots.
While arthritis isn’t curable, we can manage their pain and keep them comfortable as they age. 💙 Let’s spread awareness today, and help our older cats live their best lives!
