😴 Could Your Dog Be Sleep Deprived? 😴

This may come as a surprise...

An adult dog should typically be sleeping for around 16-18 hours every day.

A puppy should be sleeping for around 18-20 hours every day. 🐾

Read that again.

If your dog isn't getting close to those amounts, there is a good chance they are sleep deprived.

Now imagine trying to go about your day after repeatedly getting only a few hours of sleep.

You'd struggle to concentrate.

You'd become irritable.

You'd find it harder to make good decisions.

You might overreact to things that wouldn't normally bother you.

Dogs are no different.

Sometimes the dog who is reactive, over-excited, frustrated, anxious or unable to settle isn't being "naughty" at all.

Sometimes they're simply exhausted.

Sleep is when the brain processes information, emotions settle and the body recovers from the stresses of daily life.

Without enough sleep, dogs can find it much harder to cope with the world around them.

Of course, we can't tell our dogs to go to sleep!

But we can create the right conditions for sleep to happen.

🐾 Provide a safe, comfortable place to rest.
🐾 Encourage licking, chewing and gnawing activities.
🐾 Offer appropriate mental stimulation.
🐾 Ensure your dog gets suitable exercise.
🐾 Build rest periods into the day, especially after walks, training and play.
🐾 Teach boundary games so your dog learns to seek out and enjoy relaxing in their bed.

At Naughty Dog School, we often talk about behaviour being driven by emotion.

And before we can change behaviour, we need to make sure our dogs' basic needs are being met.

Sometimes the first step towards a calmer, happier dog isn't more training.

It's more sleep. ❤️
