Tuner (Daniel Roher, 2025)

‘Tuner’ is a sharply edited, highly polished crime drama that feels like a throwback to the kind of intelligent adult thrillers Hollywood used to make in the 1970s. What elevates it beyond a straightforward caper film is its social conscience and the way it places disability at the centre of the story. Niki (Leo Woodall), has a rare hearing condition that gives him an extraordinary ability to distinguish individual notes on a piano, even when they are played simultaneously....

Hook (Steven Spielberg, 1991)

What happens when the boy who never grew up ends up doing exactly that? ‘Hook’ takes the familiar Peter Pan story and asks a surprisingly interesting question: what if Peter has become the very thing he was once trying to escape? Robin Williams plays him as a hard-driving businessman, someone absorbed by work, acquisitions and deadlines, prioritizing career over family life....

Catch Me If You Can (Steven Spielberg, 2002)

There is something slightly flimsy about ‘Catch Me If You Can’, though I mean that less as a criticism than as a reflection of its breezy, old-fashioned quality. With its caper-style score by John Williams, echoing the jazzy sensibility of Henry Mancini, the film feels like a throwback to the stylish ‘man on the run’ pictures of the 1960s. Here, Leonardo DiCaprio plays Frank Abagnale Jr., a teenager so shaken by his parents’ divorce that he turns, in a way reminiscent of Matt Damon in ‘The Talented Mr....

Cabin at the Movies Saturday 30 May 2026

This week's guest is Marion Stuart whom I interviewed on Cabin at the Movies in May 2025, and who sadly passed away just over a week ago. Looking back, I suspect Marion may even have been one of the very last people still alive who remembered seeing Bambi when it was first released in the early 1940s. She also told me how she went to see Ben-Hur night after night because she had fallen in love with Charlton Heston!...

Power Ballad (John Carney, 2026)

I thought ‘Power Ballad’ was a magnificent film about a wedding singer who inadvertently comes close to the success he always dreamed of after a song he wrote is effectively stolen during a late-night jam session and transformed into an international number-one hit by somebody else. One slight weakness is that some of the musical sequences are not especially well edited – there are moments when it’s obvious the performers are not actually singing in sync with the vocals....

Cabin at the Movies Saturday 23 May 2026

On this week's Cabin at the Movies Jacqui Delbaere revisits The Shining, Paul March Russell heads west with Once Upon a Time in the West, James Looseley talks about the much-loved The Shawshank Redemption, Chris Greenfield travels Back to the Future, and John Lyden explores the dark fantasy world of Pan’s Labyrinth. Plus, I’ll be taking a look at what’s out at the cinema this week, and we’ll also be heading back in time for this week in movie history.

Finding Emily (Alicia MacDonald, 2026)

‘Finding Emily’ comes from the same sort of stable – at least in terms of its Working Title Films pedigree – that gave us films like ‘Notting Hill’ and ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’. It operates in that familiar ‘what if?’ territory we’ve seen in films such as ‘Sliding Doors’, where chance encounters and alternative possibilities shape people’s lives. As somebody who spent a quarter of a century working in the university sector, though, I found parts of the set-up wildly implausible....

Romería (Carla Simón, 2025)

‘Romería’ is an intriguing film because it draws on diaries, fragments and half-truths – the kinds of stories and omissions that many families construct around themselves. At its centre is Marina (Llúcia Garcia), a young woman from Barcelona who in 2004 sets out to uncover the truth about a father she never knew. She is applying for a university scholarship and needs official details concerning her parents, but the search quickly becomes something much more personal....
