Raw Meaty Bones. What are they and why are they important to add into our dogs diets?
First thing to touch on is cooked bones.
These cooked bones are often labelled different names in pet shops and supermarkets. Cooked, Smoked, Dehydrated, Puffed to name a few. But however worded they have been hit with heat and have become unsafe, potentially indigestible and puts your dog at serious risk of splintering and puncturing internally!
Most common bones heat treated are chicken feet and necks, duck feet and necks, tails, knuckle and marrow bones. AVOID.
Now onto the good bones. Look for the ones in the freezer!!
Feeding Raw Meaty Bones to your dogs once or twice a week will have significant benefit to their all around health.
Its a full body physical and mental workout! They use use their entire body to anchor down and work on stripping and chomping through the bone.
This chomping has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety in dogs and releases their happy hormone, Dopamine.
Chewing on bones is the best thing for full all around oral health. Scraping plaque from teeth, freshening breath and keeping gums healthy.
Not to mention they provide key nutrients and are packed full of glucosamine, chondroitin and collagen all which aid the dogs joint health.
So what are the best types of bones to choose?
In my opinion. Neck and Spine bones are the best.
These bones are full of nodules and crevasses that ensure the dogs use all their teeth to strip the meat and chew.
Where as other bones like chicken wings for example will be eaten only by the dogs back teeth. These are still healthy bones, but you will get more bang for you buck with necks and spines.
The bone you choose for your dogs cant be too big. The bigger it is the more work they will need to put in to get through it.
But they can be too small. So if you have a large dog, avoid bones which can be swallowed whole or chewed through in seconds.
At Pure and Raw we stock a huge range of Raw Meaty Bones and can help advise you on the best bones for your specific dogs type, age and size.
