Loud or unexpected noises like fireworks can be frightening for many dogs. For an owner, seeing your best friend distressed can be upsetting. But don’t worry, there are several ways you can help your dog through it.

What to do during fireworks:

• Block out flashes and bangs. Close any windows or curtains and turn the lights on.

• Put on music or the TV to help disguise the noise. Try Classic FM radio or look for a dog soothing playlist – gentle piano tracks that help mask fireworks and soothe anxiety.

• If your dog wants to hide, let them stay where they feel safe. Try creating a safe place or a den where they can feel comfortable.

• If they seek reassurance, calmly give them attention and comfort. Try not to over fuss them as soon as the fireworks start. Research shows that ignoring them won’t help.

• Try to stay calm and relaxed yourself. Your dog will pick up on how you’re feeling, so do your best to relax.

• Don’t tell your dog off. If your dog makes a mess or does something you don’t want because of their fear, avoid telling them off. This might make them feel more scared.

• Make sure their water bowl is full and you feed them earlier in the evening. Also walk them earlier to avoid being out at the time of the fireworks.

• Keep your dog on a lead just incase, dogs can get frightened and run away. Also check that all their details and microchip numbers are up to date to be safe.

Talk to your vet
If your dog shows signs of fear of fireworks or loud noises, make an appointment with your vet as soon as possible to seek advice.

Crisp leaves and cooler days = autumn adventures 🍁

But while the season is beautiful, it can bring a few hidden dangers for our pets.

From wild mushrooms on the trail to tempting Halloween treats at home, a little extra care goes a long way in keeping tails wagging this autumn.

What’s your go-to tip for keeping pets safe this season?

🍎HAZARDS OF FALLEN FRUIT🍎

Alcohol Poisoning: As fruit rots and ferments, it produces ethanol (alcohol), which is toxic to dogs and can cause symptoms like wobbliness, lethargy and even comas.

Gastrointestinal Obstruction: Hard items like acorns, conkers, and the stones of apples and plums can cause a blockage in the stomach or intestines, which may require surgery.

Mould and Toxins: Mouldy fruit can contain tremorgenic mycotoxins, which overstimulate the nervous system and can lead to muscle tremors and seizures.

Digestive Upset: Even if not fermented, ingesting fallen fruit can lead to stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Parasites and Bugs: Fallen fruit can also harbor insects and parasites that are harmful to dogs.

✅WHAT TO DO✅

Prevent Consumption: Keep a close eye on your dog during walks to stop them from eating fruit off the ground.

Clear Your Garden: Regularly inspect and clear any fallen fruit from your garden to remove the hazard.

Seek Veterinary Advice: Contact your veterinarian immediately if you think your dog has eaten any fallen fruit.
