Teaching impulse control helps dogs make calmer choices, focus around distractions, and build better manners in everyday life. Consistent practice of these commands can create a calmer, more focused dog who is easier to manage both at home and out on walks.

How to get your dog started on their Scentwork journey. The first thing we want to teach our dog’s is to sniff on cue. When we say search we want our dog’s to start sniffing.

In this tutorial video on Scentwork we are teaching our dog’s how to search in a structured way and using high value food (slices of ham) to motivate our dog’s to keep searching every pot.

How to start:
1.Place out 4 pots in a line (this a can be plastic takeaway pots, cardboard boxes, flower pots, small buckets etc)

2. Place small bits treats on every pot. Ideally a treat that can stick to the side of the pot ie cheese, ham, chicken, turkey etc (not dry treats)

3. Put your dog on a lead. These keeps the search focused, calm and structured. Having your dog off lead at the beginning stages will make for a rushed, messy search and your dog will probably end up picking up the pots & running off to chew them.

4. Say the word “search” then move your hand towards the first pot to indicate to your dog that you want them to start sniffing the first pot.

5. Start slowly walking toward the 2nd pot as your dog is sniffing and eating the treats off the 1st pot. This helps to encourage them to move along the line of pots, sniffing and eating the treats as they go along. DO NOT say “Search” again let your dog learn to move along the line up without you having to prompt them. Use your body to do this not your words or hands pointing to the treats.

6. Once your dog has finished sniffing the last pot say “Finished” reward your dog and re set the pots with treats.

Repeat this 5-6 times per session, randomising the amount of treats on each pot and keeping some pots without treats.

Introducing Marlin the Golden Retriever. Marlin joined my puppy classes last year. She had some 1 to 1 training sessions later last year when she hit adolescence and her humans were struggling with her recall.

Marlin has recently joined the group walks on Tuesday & Thursdays. She has been a great addition to the midday walks.

If you live in central Cambridge and would like your dog to join the group walks send a DM for more info

I have been a professional dog walker for 17 years now. I’ve tried all sorts of products and equipment over the years. These 5 things are my ultimate must haves!! (as well as poo bags & dog leads of course!!)

1. Dog walking belt: Absolute game changer when it comes to having to have the dogs on lead while passing other people, dogs, tractors etc

2. Trackers: I use Tractive, they are very reliable and their app is super easy to use. For a discount check out the link in my bio.

3. Walking Boots: An absolute must. Over the years I have tried many different wellies but personally Muck Boots are the most comfortable.

4. Healthy Treats: my go to top dog food brands are Rocketo and Platinum. I have a discount code for Rocketo in my bio link.

5. The Whistle: The dog’s have a couple of recall cues. They come to their name and to the cue “come” but the whistle is their emergency recall cue. When they hear the whistle they know to come straight away. This is a must as a dog walker to keep everyone safe.

If you are a professional dog walker. What are your must have’s? Comment below

In my Improvement Dog Classes we teach go round. Here are the benefits…

Teaching your dog the “Go Around” trick isn’t just a fun party move—it’s a surprisingly powerful training tool 🐾

This simple behavior helps improve your dog’s focus, coordination, and responsiveness to cues. As they learn to move around an object (or even you), they’re building body awareness and confidence in their movements. It’s especially great for high-energy dogs who need both mental and physical stimulation.

“Go Around” also strengthens communication between you and your dog. It reinforces listening skills and teaches them to follow direction even when moving away from you—something that can carry over into better recall and leash manners.

And let’s not forget: it’s fun. Training tricks like this keeps sessions engaging, breaks up routine obedience work, and gives your dog a rewarding challenge.

A smarter, more focused, and happier pup—all from one simple trick.

I started up Cambridge Dog Services in 2009 offering dog walking and pet sitting. It wasn’t long into starting up the business, when I wanted to learn more about how dog’s minds worked. I then started attending some dog trainer courses and quickly got the bug of wanting to know everything about dogs!

Teaching dogs and their humans on how to form a connection and build a bond with one another became my passion. 17 years on I feel so lucky to be able spend my days outdoors walking and training dogs all day.

This year I wanted to work on expanding the business so I brought on Gemma who will be running my Chesterton group walks. Gemma has been a dear friend of mine for many many years and I knew she would be the perfect person for the job. She absolutely adores dogs and they love her. I couldn’t of asked for a better first employee
