Sorry to everyone I've had to cancel today's appointments for, we were nearly fully booked as well πŸ˜” I guess the last two weeks of being sociable and pushing my health and anxiety and being strong for Rupert caught up with me, as I've got some kind of virus that has absolutely floored me. The kind where you're pretty sure your head will explode if you move your eyes and breathing hurts. I'm hoping the severity of it means it's a one-hit-and-done and I'll be functional again next week.

So as much as I'd rather be working and seeing your piggies, I'm having to start my weekend a day early. Hopefully we'll get back to it ASAP. I won't confirm any rebookings for next week until next week i.e. I know the path of this illness, if I can honour them, so I appreciate you bearing with me!

For now I've made myself come outside to the garden and I'm sitting in the sun with a gentle breeze, a wall full of wisteria, and all the water and yogurt I could find.

Enjoy your weekend!

An update on Rupert...

After 180 miles driving (45 each way, twice over), a 14 hour day, and a lot of emotions and stress, Rupert is crying no more! As expected, the dribbling urine and grunting were a serious concern and when Kim found that his bladder was quite full, it was obvious that the only way forward was to leave him with them for the day for an x-ray, and anticipate a bladder flush - and of course stone (urolith) removal if indicated.

The x-ray showed a bladder full of sediment, and more worryingly a stone in his urethra blocking the flow of urine. Had I not acted when I did, he would have become critically ill within days and we would have had to have him put to sleep in extreme pain. As it is, we don't know for sure how long his urine flow was reduced because living with another pig, it's impossible to track such details. Whether he has any lasting damage to his kidneys as a result, we simply don't know, it's something we will just have to monitor carefully.

Simon performed a urethrostomy, so poor Rupert has had his most delicate area cut open to remove the stone. He's been flushed through thoroughly and he handled it all like a champ. He's home on metacam and gabapentin, and we will start long-term furosemide treatment next week - a diuretic to keep his renal system flushing through to try to prevent crystals and sediment building up in his pipework again.

He's not quite himself as yet, not taking the initiative to eat and drink for himself, but if offered anything by hand he's very enthusiastic. He's perfectly mobile and he is toileting without crying or straining, so I'm optimistic about his recovery.

Of all my 3 boys I have tended to share the least about Roo, mainly because he's such a quiet soul. He doesn't like drama, he's not an outgoing personality, he's content to just be in the background living his own introverted life. He's my gentlest, giant teddy bear of a pig. Turns out he's incredibly strong and brave too.

Photo of his war wound in the comments. It's not too graphic. Mostly a superb close shave with just a couple of stitches where the incision was made.

Well, my next post was supposed to be a little peek at a few of our Easter holiday visitors, but that will have to wait until I'm sitting at the vets tomorrow morning waiting for one of my own boys to have an x-ray!

With impeccable timing, Rupert has started squeaking, grunting and hunching when toileting. He has a couple of lesions/blisters on his p***s which I'm "optimistic" suggests infection - his urine may be more acidic than it should be, which combined with dribbling urine rather than a regular expulsion (puddle), is stinging like hell. That's the best case scenario.

Worst case is bladder stone, hence we have an early morning appointment with our preferred vets an hour away so that we have time for an x-ray, which I fully expect will be necessary before assuming an infection.

At least we're getting it out the way before the Easter weekend and not during! 🫠

πŸŽ₯ Video isn't comfortable listening so feel free to skip. Posted for educational purposes. Once you hear the squeaking and grunting and the pitch and pattern of it, you get attuned to how different it is to any other noises piggies make and it makes noticing a problem that much easier!

0.05 seconds later he was not in his bed, going from zero to sixty in the half blink of an eye in classic Timmy fashion, so I'm glad I managed to get this.

Looking forward to a house full of little moments of happiness, cheekiness, nosiness and inquisitiveness like this as we start to fill up for Easter!

We are fully booked with friends old and new - so regrettably we have no spaces at all remaining until 7 April. We have *very* limited availability for May half term and for several dates in July & August. I will issue a fuller update on this and update the website shortly.

For now please submit your request via https://www.guineapiggroomer.co.uk/boarding-forms and I'll get back to you whether we have room at the inn or not!

Just a heads to to say we are fully closed from tomorrow (Sat 14th) through to Friday 20th March.

I will spend this weekend making sure I'm caught up on everything, including outstanding discussions, so if you have any Easter questions or changes you need an urgent response to, then please let me know ideally before Sunday. I will then be off grid all of next week and unable to pick up any messages.

To pre-empt the most likely question, I am full for 3-6 April but have space either side of these dates, however you will need to reserve your space ASAP! Everything you need to book is on the website: https://www.guineapiggroomer.co.uk/boarding-forms

🐹 If you've got guinea pigs, they will at a minimum need regular nail clips and health checks, not to mention haircuts if they're long haired, and bathing for all breeds as necessary. Don't stress yourself out trying to do it all yourself if it doesn't come easy to you!

🐹 If you're going on holiday, you'll also need someone to look after them while you're away. Hence I have multiple permanent cages set up in my home to cater for up to ~20 guests at any given time. All indoors, everything provided, no children and no other pets (aside from my own 3 guineas). School holidays do get incredibly busy though so booking early is essential.

πŸ‘‹πŸΌ I have 23 years experience with all breeds and ages, and offer affordable, specialist, guinea pig only care in the Huntingdon and nearby areas. Please note I have no experience or reference for other species and can't make any recommendations for rabbits, hamsters etc. The exclusivity is what clients love about having their pigs looked after here☺️

More details about all our services, including pricing, can be found by having a nosy around our website: https://www.guineapiggroomer.co.uk

The first groom of 2026 went to Fifi & Nimbus, two gorgeous little white fluffy sheep we first met last year as tiny babies. We are grateful to have been entrusted with their grooming needs ever since. It's always a joy to see these two.

These girls are fully long haired but with routine grooms and a suitable environment have never had a knot, matt or tangle. Getting them started on grooms at a young age means they know what to expect when they see me and makes them much easier to groom as a result (although personality is a factor here; some pigs will always loathe grooms!)

All information about grooms, for long, short and semi-long haired piggies, can be found on our website and we take bookings most weekdays here in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire 😊
