When dogs feel safe enough to rest, to play gently, or to quietly sit alongside one another, they're telling us something important.

They're telling us they don't need to be on high alert.

Rupert, Oscar, Tadhg, Cece and Opal spent today exactly as they chose—resting, exploring, playing, observing and enjoying the little moments.

For me, that's what successful daycare looks like 🤍

Why I Wait

The world can ask a lot of dogs.

To be confident.
To be sociable.
To keep up.

Here, I ask for none of those things.

Instead, I wait.

Because waiting gives me the chance to truly observe—to notice the small changes, the quiet signals, the moments that are so easily overlooked.

It gives dogs the space to breathe, to think, and to choose.

Not every situation needs immediate intervention.

Sometimes, patience and quiet compassion are the most meaningful things we can offer.

When we slow down enough to listen, dogs often show us exactly what they need.

Whether they're the first to greet everyone, or happiest quietly observing from the sidelines.

Lately I've found myself thinking a lot about acceptance.

Not acceptance as giving up, but acceptance as meeting a dog exactly where they are.

Carl Jung wrote about the importance of bringing understanding to what we often resist. In canine behaviour, I think the same principle applies. So often we're tempted to focus on stopping the behaviour, when perhaps the better question is, what is this dog trying to tell us?

A nervous dog doesn't need to become confident before they deserve patience. A sensitive dog doesn't need to be more social before they deserve kindness.

Every behaviour is communication. Every dog has their own story, temperament and emotional capacity.

For me, behaviour isn't about fixing dogs. It's about observing without judgement, understanding with curiosity, and creating an environment where they feel safe enough to grow.

Maybe acceptance is where real progress begins. 💚

What does sensory enrichment look like in our daycare? 🌿🎶🤍

At The Cambridge Pet Nanny, enrichment isn't just about keeping dogs busy—it's about supporting their emotional wellbeing and giving them opportunities to explore the world in ways that feel safe and natural.

Every dog is different, so we adapt enrichment to the individual. This may include:

🌿 Herb gardens with dog-safe plants such as mint and thyme for scent work.
👃 Sniffing activities using natural materials to encourage exploration through scent.
🎶 Different styles of music, from calming classical pieces to gentle brown noise, to help create a relaxed environment.
🛏️ A choice of beds and resting spaces, allowing dogs to choose where they feel most comfortable.
🧸 Different textures and touch experiences, including soft blankets, cosy beds, grass, bark, and gentle handling when the dog chooses to engage.
🧩 Food enrichment and puzzles to encourage problem-solving and natural foraging behaviours. 🌳 Nature walks and outdoor exploration, where dogs can sniff, observe and move at their own pace.
🤍 Choice, control and rest, because sometimes the most valuable enrichment is simply having the freedom to relax.

We believe enrichment isn't about doing more, it's about understanding what each individual dog needs in that moment. By engaging the senses of smell, hearing, touch, sight and taste, we can help dogs feel safe, curious and supported throughout their day.

Eating and drinking in a new or unfamiliar environment can be surprisingly stressful for many dogs.

Just as some people lose their appetite when they're feeling anxious, dogs can experience the same thing. New surroundings, unfamiliar sounds, different smells, and being around other dogs can all affect how comfortable they feel at mealtimes.

That's why we don't rush this process.

Before your dog joins us, we ask how they usually eat and drink at home. Do they prefer someone to sit quietly with them? Do they like complete privacy? Are they confident eaters, or do they need a little reassurance?

Every dog is then fed individually in a quiet, sectioned-off area of the daycare, away from the rest of the group. We take our time, observe what helps them feel safe, and support them in a way that respects their individual needs.

For us, mealtimes aren't simply about nutrition. They're an opportunity to build trust, reduce stress, and help each dog feel secure in a new environment.

Sometimes, the greatest act of care is slowing down enough to understand what a dog is trying to tell us 💚🐾
