Think back to when you first fell in love with horses and riding. I can guarantee almost everyone fell in love with the horses before the sport.
Yet the equestrian world teaches us to ride and treat our horses in a certain way. It almost teaches us that in order to be a successful equestrian we need to ride our horse in an outline or be our getting rosettes.
When I look back at the bhs exams I've taken and my time in college learning about horse management not once was there a consideration for what the horse wanted or how they were trying to communicate.
I've met so many horses over the years and many had 'problems' on the ground or ridden, some of these were PTS and some sold on or sent off for 'training' . When in fact all of them were simply trying to tell us that something was not ok either mentally or physically. If only someone would have listened.
In recent years i have chosen to step away from the traditional methods of 'horsemanship', instead I choose to listen to my horses and give them a choice. I don't always get things right but I try my best, I'm always learning more from these amazing creatures. ❤️
Anyone who meets my herd always comments on how relaxed and calm they are. The reason for this is simply because they have a safe space where they know they have choices and are listened too.
I'm always available to help anyone wanting to go down the same route and my inbox is always open for questions 🙂
