ℹ️ VERY important up to date information ℹ️

A quick reminder that no dog died from missing a walk, but many dogs have died as a result of being exercised in hot weather!

I've treated many dogs with heat stroke and it is often fatal, which is heartbreaking for the owners.

Dogs really struggle in the heat - they cannot sweat so they cool themselves down by panting.

☀️ Dogs die quickly in hot cars - even if they're only left for a few minutes!

☀️Dogs often get heat stroke on hot walks

☀️Animals can get heatstroke if they have no access to cool water

10 times as many dogs present for veterinary care for heatstroke after being exercised in hot weather than present following being entrapped in a car.

Flat-faced breeds such as pugs or French bulldogs are at an even bigger risk of heatstroke.

❌Do not leave animals in hot cars
❌ Ensure they aren't locked in rooms with no ventilation
❌ Provide access to plenty of cool, clean water
❌Do not exercise in the heat

If a dog is collapsed from heatstroke you should:

✅ Bring your dog inside into a shady, well ventilated, cool room
✅Call your local vets and follow their instructions
✅Cool them down by pouring cold water on them
✅ Offer them a small drink of cool water, don't allow they to lap up huge quantities at once in case they vomit
✅ Travel to the vets in a cold, air-conditioned car

Would you know how to deal with a dog attack? 🐶⚠️

Dogs don’t go around looking to attack others, and a well-socialised dog will not normally be actively aggressive towards other dogs 🙅‍♀️ But, any dog can become aggressive if they are afraid and feel there is no other way out of the situation.

This can be due to a current perceived threat or even past experience making them uncomfortable 😟

It can be really distressing if a dog becomes aggressive. Obviously your main concern is the welfare of your furry friend, but there are a few important things you need to do if your dog or a person is a victim of a dog bite.

HOW TO PROTECT PAWS ON HOT PAVEMENTS
1. Follow the five-second rule, and check the surface for heat with the back of your hand, before you leave the house.
2. Keep to grass.
3. Walk early in the morning or late in the evening when surfaces are cooler.
4. Invest in a pair of booties to help avoid burning paws.

There are some simple steps that we can take to avoid our pets developing heatstroke in the warmer weather ☀️ https://ow.ly/Yn4V50PHqI4 👇

With children and pets spending more time together over the summer holidays, it's super important to watch dogs closely and listen to their body language to tell if they're starting to feel uncomfortable ⚠️🐶

Dogs' stress signals often get misunderstood or missed, with some owners not realising their dog is unhappy until they growl, snap or even bite 😟

The canine ladder of communication is a useful guide, showing the different signals dogs show through their body language to communicate. As a dog gets more upset, their body language may change according to the steps on the ladder.

It’s important to note that all dogs are different - not every dog will show every behaviour on the ladder and might not follow the specific order.

Exercising your dog's brain is an important part of their daily routine. 🧠💪 One of the simplest brain games you can start with is scatter feeding. To do this, scatter your dog’s food on the floor, around the house or in the garden. This encourages your dog to search for their food and helps encourage their natural foraging behaviours. 🐶

We recommend using a portion of your dog’s daily food for games in order to avoid overfeeding.
