Super session today with a mix of urban and rural trails. There were challenges to problem solve and some of the dogs worked out themselves and some the handlers stepped in when it was clear the dog was struggling.
It made the discussion on When & How to Help very meaningful as we could use the first set of trails as examples.

🐾Do you want to do something fun with your dog where you work together as a team? 🐾

Julie is a GAK9 Trainer and has been working her two GSDs since 2019.

The GAK9 self-discovery method allows dogs to fully use their natural abilities, without complicated rules or patterns. The dog follows a person’s scent from an article they have left behind, locates the hidden subject, and is rewarded for their success.

Sport Trailing is suitable for dogs of all ages and any breed.

Dogs are worked one at a time and on a long line, making this an ideal activity for reactive and/or nervous dogs, or those lacking confidence.

If you’ve never taken part before first time places are available when the location is suitable.

New dates are published of the 1st of the month.

Do you need to show the dog where the scent article is? NO

Do you need to hold them to ensure they have sniffed it? NO

Can a dog locate the scent article? YES

Will they get enough scent with a quick sniff? YES

In this slo mo clip you can clearly see Tasha turn her head to the article to confirm she has the scent she needs to follow.

This was on an extremely contaminated track.

Had there been little or no contamination simply walking by would have been enough for her.

Self Discovery has no rules or rituals.

Syd is an experienced dog and had a pretty good idea who she was going to be finding as we walked to the start.

This was confirmed with the contact odour left on the bench as the TL had sat on it for 30 secs before laying the the trail.

Wind direction, topography and temperature can all affect where the scent is and especially on the apex of a turn.

Sway's body language was very clear that something had happened. She had been head popping to the right for quite a while which was where the wind was coming from and where the TL had walked after the hairpin turn.

Although she never 'asked' for help it was given as she was clearly showing where she needed to be.

GAK9 Certifications are available in the Peak District and surrounding areas.

The only true way to test a trailing team is through double blind trails, ensuring a fair, impartial and realistic assessment of both handler and dog.

Assessments are structured across four environmental classes, each with four progressive levels, designed to accurately reflect a team’s skill, experience and development.

✔️ No requirement to train with me prior to assessment.
✔️ Open to all teams who meet the assessment criteria.

If you’re a trailing instructor, assessment days can also be arranged at your own location.
