🔥🐾 Could Your Dog’s Walk Be Burning Their Paws? ☀️

As temperatures rise, so do the risks and one often-overlooked danger is hot pavements, tarmac and artificial grass. While it may feel warm to us, surfaces can become hot enough to burn your dog’s paws in seconds.

🌡️ Did you know?
• At 25°C air temperature, tarmac can reach around 52°C, hot enough to cause burns in around a minute
• At 30°C+, surface temperatures can become dangerously high 🔥
• Artificial grass and dark tarmac can become even hotter than expected

🐶 Higher-risk dogs include:
• Puppies and senior dogs
• Small or short-legged breeds
• Flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds
• Dogs with sensitive paw pads or health conditions

💡 Simple ways to protect your dog:
• 🌅 Walk early morning or later in the evening
• 🌱 Choose grass or shaded routes where possible
• ✋ Try the 5–10 second hand test if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws
• 💧 Keep dogs cool and hydrated

🚨 Signs of paw burns: limping, licking paws, redness, blisters or reluctance to walk. If you suspect burns, cool the paws and contact your vet.

🔥OVERHEATED ANIMALS - IT CAN HAPPEN EASILY AND VERY QUICKLY!🔥
...How and how quickly you react will determine if your animal survives.

There have been a lot of posts this heatwave around how to manage dogs, horses, even people to reduce the risk of heatstroke and worse. Many posts have had abusive comments around anyone who does take their dog out in the heat of the day. Others saying you can manage it if you are careful. Personally, I opt for keeping them in on the stone floor with fans or a portable AC unit if very hot and short toilet breaks in the garden.

Here's a short story I'd like to share to illustrate it can go wrong so easily and so quickly, which was prompted by reading the comments on some other posts.

As someone involved in thermoregulation research and practical application of heat mitigation in people, horses, dogs and even occasionally some more "exotic" animals, I thought I would be the last person in the world to experience one of my dogs getting severe hyperthermia and heat stroke! I was taking my 8 year old black lab for a short walk around 10am on a hot day. We were walking down a grass track in the shade! She was on the lead. I thought this was low risk. Suddenly a deer ran out - we had never seen them in this location before! She managed to get free and took off. It took me about 20 min to find her. By that time she was lying on her side and in trouble. Luckily we were only about 30m from a river and I picked her up and just walked in. After about 15 min she recovered and suffered no long lasting effects! I just wanted to share this to show accidents do happen and can happen to anyone.

As I said at the start, its what you do and how quickly you do it that determines the chance of a good outcome. "Wet then vet". Too many comments about "cold water causes heart attacks" and "wet their paws" and "don't wet them they will overheat". This is dangerous misinformation!

Have people never heard the saying ‘only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun’ Seems in Bury it’s stupid Englishmen and dogs with no choice!! Have just seen 18 dogs being walked, two actually putting the breaks on and looking distressed, one of which was a British bulldog. Another saying is ‘a dog is man’s best friend’ please treat them as such. There are highs of 28 degrees and it’s currently 25. I know people in the veterinary industry and pet cremation industry and they have both had numerous casualties due to this recent heat. Our dogs are not used to a sudden change like this!

Due to the high temperatures and full sun forecast there will be no training or walking tomorrow. I will monitor each day this week. Keep your dogs cool and remember skipping a walk never killed a dog, heatstroke does. 🥵🐾

🐶 Sudden UK heat spike this weekend – protect your dogs! 🐶

🌡️ A BIG temperature jump is forecast in the coming days ☀️🐶
Many areas in Central and Southern UK are expected to jump from the cool 15–20°C we’ve had for much of May straight up to 30°C+. For dogs that haven’t had their summer clip yet, this sudden change brings real risks, especially as they’re not acclimatised. Older dogs, overweight dogs, and those with heart or respiratory conditions may be particularly vulnerable.

Dr David Marlin (https://askanimalweb.com/home) has been clear on this for years: a dog’s coat does NOT keep them cool in hot weather. Hair is insulation, it traps body heat and slows heat loss. The thicker or longer the coat, the harder it is for dogs to cool down.

⚠️ Higher-risk dogs include:
• Large breeds
• Thick or dark-coated dogs
• Overweight, unfit or older dogs
• Flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds
• Dogs with heart or respiratory issues
• Very active dogs

💡 Practical management tips:
• 🌅 Walk early morning or late evening only
• 🔥 Avoid hot pavements/tarmac
• 🏠 Keep dogs cool indoors during peak heat
• 💧 Provide constant access to fresh water
• ✂️ Consider clipping long/thick coats
• 💦 Use water, paddling pools or cooling aids carefully
• 🚗 Never leave dogs in cars, Ever!
• 🌱 Be cautious of artificial grass, which can become much hotter than real grass

🚨 Signs of heatstroke (medical emergency):
• Heavy panting or restlessness
• Excessive drooling/thirst
• Red or purple gums/tongue
• Weakness, collapse or seizures

❗ If suspected: WET THEN VET!
Immediately cool the dog with cold water and seek veterinary help ASAP — rapid cooling saves lives.
