An oft-forgotten exercise, the 10m loop benefits every horse’s strength, balance and suppleness. They can also work as a gentle introduction to counter-canter. Plus, it’ll sharpen up a rider’s use of aids. Read more below

What a day! After a later than normal ponies and Prosecco on Friday night(obviously it would be an awesome late one as I had to be up at the crack of dawn)! I had a very early start to travel the amazing Oakley to West Sussex to the prestigious grounds of Hickstead All England Show Ground for the NSEA (national schools equine association
) championship. No I wasn’t riding him unfortunately I’m too old, obviously you thought I wasn’t!! 😉 I set of earlier to beat the heat and he got a bath before we left to help keep him cool. A stop half way for a drink and wash down and me a wee 🤣 got us there in good time. Issys dad thought I’d gone mad parking so far across the show ground till he clicked I’d found a massive shaded tree to park under. Winner!! Parking next to pony club members I know from the horse and pony care comp we host, small world 🤗 then after a quick wander round and a coffee 😮‍💨 it was fun time.
Isabele who’s ridden at Hill farm since she was a little dot of about 6 yrs old and now knocking on the teenager door had been taking part in the online dressage tests through the winter and spring representing her school Debenham High School, during her Sunday private lessons and practicing her technique during her group lessons to go on and win her area to qualify for the champs. After discussing and Dad organising to sell an organ etc to fund this day we got planning. Issy worked so hard as well as used her pocket money for her lessons, Oakley got put on a diet and today she managed to come away remembering her test, on a rather spicy Oakley, to be 20.2 points away from the winner, proud doesn’t do the day justice! She’s ridden against riders who own their own ponies and horses that have seen more than just riding school life. They both looked amazing 🥰 now home and with a big tea and well deserved 2nd bowl of Saracen Horse Feeds recovery mash and chilling in the field, thank you to Ingatestone Saddlery for allowing me to park up and get your carpark all wet for Oakley’s mid way home soaking and a drink. I also picking up some more electrolytes for the yard ready for a busy week ahead and I may have had a quick look at the sale rail 😉
WELL DONE IZZY AND OAKLEY top job 🥳🥳🥳

Hot weather exercise guide for horses ☀️

We often see posts regarding dogs struggling in the heat but horses do too, especially during exercise, travelling or standing in direct sunlight. High temperatures and humidity can increase the risk of dehydration, heat stress and heatstroke.
Under 20°C
Suitable for normal exercise with sensible management and plenty of fresh water.
20–25°C
Reduce intensity or duration where needed and include regular walk breaks.
25–30°C
Avoid strenuous work. Keep sessions short and light, ideally early morning or later in the evening.
Over 30°C
Avoid ridden exercise where possible and focus on keeping your horse cool and hydrated.

Cooling tip:
Research by Dr Joe Pagan and the team at Kentucky Equine Research found that continuous application of cold water is the most effective way to cool horses down. There’s no need to scrape the water off between applications so keep the cold water flowing to help reduce body temperature as efficiently as possible.
