🕷️ Ticks can spread serious diseases, so check your pets from early spring until it gets cold, especially after walks in grassy or woodland areas.

🔹 Safe tick removal:
• Use a tick twister or tweezers close to the skin.
• Twist slowly until the tick lets go — don’t squeeze!
• Clean the bite and reward your pet with a treat 🐾

Pearl the Staffordshire bull terrier (burwellstaffords) had a sore eye for weeks with no improvement, but Kieran spotted a superficial ulcer with a careful examination. Using an algar brush (a tiny tool that gently clears away unhealthy tissue) and a protective contact lens for comfort gave her eye the best chance to heal.

Pearl’s gentle temperament meant we could do it all while she was conscious. What a dream patient 💜🐾. Swipe to see her 3 days later celebrating a remarkable improvement by showing Bev on reception how it’s done 👉

Meet Lauren, our Registered Veterinary Nurse, who brings over 8 years of experience in the veterinary world.

“I wanted to join an independent practice because I was excited about being part of the decision-making process, and being able to offer a more personalised approach to patient care. Vets at Bretby’s practice values really align with my own, and I knew it would give me the chance to grow my skills in the areas I’m most passionate about.”

Lauren loves nurse consults and recently completed the BVNA behaviour pathway, making her our go-to person for pets who need help building confidence or for those trickier behaviours that can sometimes be hard to manage.

Outside work, when she’s not teaching tricks to her own pampered pup, she’s planning the perfect Christmas - starting in about July!

Vaccinations are a simple but important way to keep cats safe from some nasty illnesses. We recommend protection against:
🦠 Cat flu (feline herpesvirus & calicivirus)
🦠 Feline panleukopenia (a severe and sometimes life-threatening vomiting and diarrhoea bug)
🦠 Feline leukaemia virus (particularly important for outdoor cats)

Cats need vaccination top-ups each year to keep their immunity strong. Even indoor cats benefit, as some viruses can travel in on shoes, clothes or other pets.

Meet Kathryn, a vet with 15 years of experience and a passion for all things joint health. She’s an expert in pain management and can perform orthopaedic surgery, but her real focus is on pet mobility, intervening early so pets can enjoy the maximum number of adventures.

Kathryn joined Vets at Bretby because she values the freedom to involve pet owners as part of the care team and give them a voice in treatment plans - an approach she believes delivers the best outcomes for pets.

Outside of work, Kathryn loves nurturing her own food creations. She makes kombucha, kefir, and sourdough, and even turned her wine fridge into a cheese cave to mature her cheddar!

Some pets are more at risk of eye problems than others — for example, cocker spaniels, brachycephalic breeds, older cats, and dogs with a history of eye issues.

Regular intraocular pressure checks help us spot problems like glaucoma or uveitis before your pet experiences pain or vision loss, keeping them healthier for longer.
