After all the hard work at lambing time and the care taken to ensure lambs make it through those challenging first days of life, it would be nice to be able to take things easy for the next few weeks. But unfortunately it is lambs aged between 4 & 8 weeks that are at the greatest risk from coccidiosis. The disease remains one of the most common problems in young lambs and its impact on growth and performance can result in significant production loss.

Cattle prices have continuned to climb across all categories in recent weeks, with the all-prime average reaching 647p/kg in the week ending the 8th of March, an increase of 12.6p/kg on the previous week and up £1.60 on the year. The store trade also remains strong with 6-9 month steers fetching approximately £1175/h, up £50/h on the previous week. Greater numbers are coming forward due to exceptional demand, however the overall cattle population continues to fall with the GB suckler herd showing a 4% drop in numbers across 2024. There are indications of a stabilisation in cull cow prices, which reached 485.7p/kg in the week ending the 8th of March, a considerably smaller weekly increase (+1.6p/kg) than we’ve been seeing so far this year. Lamb prices have also stabilised in the most recent week as demand moves towards its seasonal peak. The SQQ price sat at 738.9p/kg in the week ending the 8th of March, a marginal increase of 0.9p/kg on the previous week. Fewer numbers are coming forward as producers send off any remaining old season lambs, freeing up available grazing for the new season.

With many producers now on the approch to spring calving, preparing cows by optimising the diet will be a key focus. To increase the chances of a sucessful calving season, cows should be in the correct BCS of 2.5 by 30 days prior to calving. In the final month of preganancy, cows should be fed to meet their requirements for energy and protein as the calf grows rapidly and the udder prepares for lactation. Ensuring the correct balance of calcium and magnesium, and an adequate supply of trace minerals is also essential to help prevent calving-related problems, support colostrum production, calf vigour, and fertility post-calving.

Lamb prices have been on an upward trajectory since the start of the year. In the week ending the 15th of February, the SQQ price sat at 736.9p/kg, an increase of 7.5p on the previous week and up 50p/kg on the year. In the coming weeks, seasonal demand over Ramadan and Easter should continue to support prices and we should also see an increase in supply with a large carry-over of 2024 lambs expected to come forward. Weekly lamb throughputs have been back so far this year, being 13% down for the week ending the 15th of Feb, reflecting a smaller lamb crop.

It’s a similar story for the beef market, with both prime and cull cow prices soaring so far in 2025. The all-prime average reached 655.6p/g in the week-ending the 15th of February, an increase of 11.8p on the previous week and up £1.60 on the year. Store prices are also holding strong with 9-15 month continental steers fetching around £1450/h. Cull cow prices reached 472.7p/kg in the week-ending the 15th of February. Driven by firm demand and a seasonal decline in throughputs, this is approximetly £1/kg higher than the last week of 2024 (just 7 weeks ago) and up £1.30 on the year.

Looking ahead to the rest of 2025, beef and lamb prices are expect to remain strong as the story of firm demand and tight supply continues.
Many producers will now already have newborn lambs on the ground, with many more due to start lambing in the next few weeks. With wet conditions still presenting challenges across the country, ensuring the ewes immune system is fully supported through optimal nutrition in the final weeks before lambing and first month of lactation is essential so she can divert as much energy as possible into rearing her lambs.

Forage crops like kale, turnips, swedes, and fodder beet are a cost-effective winter feed - but watch for health risks:
- Photosensitisation: Red, peeling, or sore skin on sheep or cattle? It could be sunlight sensitivity from grazing immature brassicas like kale or r**e. Transition stock carefully onto mature plants.
- Kale Anaemia (Redwater): Grazing kale? Look out for red urine and weak animals—this could be from excess SMCO levels.
- Sudden Deaths: Forage crops can cause nitrate toxicity, staggers, acidosis, or clostridial disease. Vaccinate livestock, transition them gradually, and supplement fibre to reduce risks.

Always discuss health concerns with your vet for accurate diagnosis and prevention!

• Pole position, at the front of the flock!

4 weeks to go until lambing time and we are carefully managing the ewe nutrition on the run up to the big day. 80% of lamb growth happens in the final 6 to 8 weeks so ensuring the ewes have enough energy to grow their lambs, produce high quality colostrum and maintain their own body condition is essential.

We do this by ensuring the ewes have plenty of readily available forage - from the pasture / haylage as well as concentrate feeding and providing lifeline buckets.

Sheep are sorted into groups depending on how many lambs they are carrying and sub divided into groups depending on when they are due to give birth. This means they can be fed a rising plane of nutrition depending on the timing and litter size.

Rumenco Breed Profile: Dorset Down Sheep

The Dorset Down is one of the UK’s oldest native sheep breeds, celebrated for its heritage and adaptability to modern farming.

Known for producing early-maturing lambs directly from grass, this breed is ideal for organic and extensive systems. Dorset Down rams are exceptional terminal sires, improving lamb conformation when paired with any breed, while their small heads and fine shoulders ensure easy lambing. Their lambs are hardy, vigorous, and thrive in challenging conditions. Dorset Down rams are effective year-round, thanks to their high pheromone count, and Dorset Down ewes adapt well to temperature extremes and winter housing.

In addition to their productivity, Dorset Downs produce some of the finest British wool, highly valued for its quality and durability, making them an excellent choice for UK farmers.
