This brave boy is Axel🐾
Whilst out on a walk, he sadly fell and immediately became lame on his left forelimb.🐕
Due to concerns that he may have sustained a fracture, Axel was referred to WMR for further assessment.
Axel was examined by our veterinary surgeon Dimitris Mitrakos, who carried out X‑rays that confirmed a Y‑shaped fracture of the humerus.🦴
A Y‑fracture is a complex injury affecting the lower part of the humerus, the section of bone that forms the elbow joint. In this type of fracture, the bone splits into three separate segments - two fragments extending into either side of the joint - creating a shape similar to the letter “Y”.
Because the fracture involves the joint surface itself and the bones that connect to the radius and ulna, extremely precise repair is essential to restore normal joint movement and long‑term function.
Axel’s fracture was stabilised using an intricate combination of plates and screws, carefully positioned to realign the joint and support the bone as it heals. Following surgery, Axel stayed in hospital overnight so we could ensure he received optimal pain relief, along with early support from our in‑house veterinary physiotherapist.❤️🩹
Recovery from this type of fracture can be lengthy due to its complexity, but Axel is doing well so far at home. 🙌
We wish him the very best as he continues his recovery - good luck, Axel!💕🐶
