To anyone considering giving up their Akita:

We need to say this as clearly as possible: 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.

Every single day, we receive messages from people asking us to "just come and take their dog."

As if we have endless space. As if rescues aren’t already bursting at the seams. As if we aren’t already losing sleep trying to find safe places for dogs who are scared, unwanted, or dangerously misunderstood, or in a pound nearing the end of their 7 days holding time at risk of being put to sleep.

The truth is: we can’t just take your dog, no matter how much we wish we could.

And please, don’t be so rude and entitled when we can’t wave a magic wand and do things for you at the click of your fingers, we are all doing this work as volunteers, alongside full-time jobs, families, responsibilities, and our own dogs.

Rescue in the UK is in crisis. Adoption levels are at an all-time low. Foster spaces are full. Kennels are full. Dogs are waiting in line for help that may never come. And yet, still, Akitas are being surrendered, because someone moved house, got a new landlord, had a baby, or just didn’t bother to understand the kind of dog they were bringing home in the first place.

Because we can’t act as quick as you want, you advertise your dog for sale or for free on the internet leaving your dog at risk of being used as bait, or bred from… you pass on your once loved pet to an uncertain fate or to an unwitting person and then block them.

Let’s be honest. You didn’t adopt a teddy bear. You got a powerful, intelligent, independent breed…

An Akita is not a starter dog.
It's not a fashion statement, A status symbol or a movie star.
It's not “just fluffy”
It’s complex
It's a dog that needs training, boundaries, enrichment, guidance, leadership and a family who respects its unique traits.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗽𝗲𝘁𝘀? Then find a home that does.

𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗯𝘆? Prepare your dog for that transition, like you would prepare any family member.

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿? Train your dog (and we don’t just mean to sit and give a paw), teach them to become independent when you leave the house, crate train them, feed them well, not just some awful stuff full of colours, fillers and E numbers (and wonder why they are so hyper), meet their basic needs… and ask for help before it becomes a crisis.

We know life changes. We know hardships happen and there are some genuine and tragic cases why you need to rehome a dog.

But far too often, these excuses are simply that: excuses.

𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗿𝘆. 𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗻. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗵𝗮𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱.

So many dogs, good dogs are being failed by the very people who promised to care for them for life.

If you're thinking of getting an Akita because it looks majestic, noble, or “cool” … don’t!

Not unless you're willing to put in the work. To learn about the breed.
To train.
To adjust your life.
To make space, even when it’s hard.
Because when you don’t, we are the ones picking up the pieces.

Signed,

Every Rescue Volunteer Who has held a scared Akita, answered the calls, replied to the relentless emails, and cleaned up the mess you, left behind!

REHOMED - Tammy (dark tortie) and Tara (dilute tortie) are a pair of females born 25/4/25, they are spayed, fully vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated. They have a clean bill of health and will be rehomed with 5 weeks free pet insurance. ALL OF THIS IS INCLUDED IN THE ADOPTION DONATION!

Tammy was found dumped in a box alongside her siblings at a busy car garage with no mum to be seen, Tara was rescued from living in a garden with her siblings, as both litters had odd numbers and these girls were the same age we have paired them up to find a home together. Although scared they are really sweet babies and we are so pleased we were able to get them to safety and they have blossomed in our foster care.

Tammy has been with us longest and has gone from a feisty little madam to being much more confident now and coming for fusses and belly rubs, Tara is still finding her feet but whilst a bit scared she has no malice and is happy to have a fuss, she will continue to grow in confidence now she is feeling safe and secure but will just need a home with time and patience to help her on her way.

Both girls are happy, lively, healthy kittens just like they should be. They charge around the room playing, love climbing their various scratch posts and generally enjoying life to then curl up for a snooze.
The kittens are litter trained (wood pellet cat litter) and are eating very well, we raise them on Royal Canin kitten dry food and Whiskas wet kitten meat which suits them well.

The kittens can happily live with other friendly neutered felines, gentle cat friendly dogs and respectful children aged 6yrs and over.

They will need a home WELL AWAY FROM ANY BUSY OR FAST ROADS with a nice garden so they can go outside to play safely (or we will consider homes with a large well equipped catio). Being fostered in SWADLINCOTE, S.DERBY'S but we will rehome further afield (subject to home check and adoption donation of £100 per kitten.

If you can offer a lifetime home to this gorgeous pair of girls please email us telling us all about your home offer including FULL ADDRESS AND CONTACT NUMBER to [email protected]. THESE KITTENS ARE READY TO LEAVE NOW SO PLEASE DON'T APPLY IF YOU ARE GOING ON HOLIDAY ETC AND NOT READY TO ADOPT
