We’ve got some lovely weather this week! ☀️ Whilst we are all looking forward to spending some time in the sun, please please be aware of the dangers of heatstroke when it comes to your pets 🙏
❗️Dogs can easily get heatstroke on walks - early morning or late evening walks can be better, but still please assess how warm it is. Dogs don’t die from missing a walk, but they can sadly easily die from heatstroke which is preventible!
❗️Animal’s feet can burn on hot pavements or artificial grass - if it’s too hot for your hands, it’s too hot for their paws!
❗️We hope everyone is aware of the national UK campaign 'Dogs Die in Hot Cars', this advice remains! We can’t stress enough how important it is to just leave your dogs at home, especially on hot days like today.
❗️Small animals can get heatstroke in hot hutches they cannot escape - ensure they have plenty of space and are kept in the shade. Did you know you can also buy cooling mats to place in hutches?
❗️Keep windows open to provide plenty of ventilation, and ensure cages, beds etc are kept out of direct sunlight.
❗️Keep everyone’s water fresh and topped up throughout the day!
Signs of heatstroke:
‼️Excessive Panting (first sign)
‼️Excessive thirst
‼️Increased heart rate
‼️Drooling (thick salivation)
‼️Bright red tongue
‼️Weakness and staggering around
‼️Aggitation and restlessness
‼️Collapse
‼️Seizuring
‼️Unconsciousness
Remember there are particular factors that could increase your pets risk of heatstroke:
❗️Brachycephalic breeds (e.g. French Bulldogs, Pugs)
❗️Age - juvenile or geriatric
❗️Thick coated dogs
❗️Poor general health
