New at Coldwell: Incredible Birds of Prey Experience Takes Flight!
We’re always looking for new ways to bring learning to life at Coldwell Activity Centre—and our latest offering is already proving a soaring success!

Recently, we welcomed SMJ Falconry to Coldwell for an unforgettable Birds of Prey Experience, which gave our Life Skills groups a unique and interactive opportunity to get up close with these magnificent creatures. With the stunning backdrop of our countryside setting, the experience has fast become a favourite with visitors of all ages.

Weather-Proof and Wonder-Filled
Group 1 was lucky enough to enjoy a full outdoor flying display, where hawks, owls, and falcons took to the skies right before their eyes! Group 2 had a wetter day, but that didn’t dampen spirits—indoors, the falconers shared fascinating facts and stories, and everyone had the chance to see the birds close-up and even handle them.

The birds were calm and captivating, and the mix of storytelling, science, and hands-on learning left everyone talking about it long after.

What You Can Expect
Delivered by the highly knowledgeable and DBS-checked team at SMJ Falconry, this experience is tailored to suit different age groups and educational goals.

Some of the topics covered include:

The differences between owls, hawks, and falcons

Nocturnal vs diurnal behaviour

How falconers train and care for birds of prey

Falconry’s role in conservation and history (especially the medieval period!)

Fun facts on anatomy, flight patterns, and diet

Each session includes:
✅ Educational talks and live presentations
✅ Bird handling opportunities
✅ Engaging Q&A sessions
✅ Flying demonstrations (weather permitting)

We always have lost property. We try our best to see it is returned. If it is not claimed after a few months we take it to charity. The latest pile has raised over 200 for Barnadoes ❤️❤️

🌟 Happy Volunteer Week! 🌟

Meet our fabulous volunteer, Tracey — one of the busiest people we know, yet always finds time to give back! 💚

Tracey is a mum to nine children (yes, nine!), works at Caldwell Activity Centre and the Trawden shop, and still volunteers here at CYAG. She first got involved to support her son Alfie, who was suddenly diagnosed with a spinal condition that affected his mobility and left him wheelchair-bound. With school no longer an option at the time, Tracey wanted to make sure Alfie could still stay socially active in an inclusive and welcoming environment.

We’re so happy to share that Alfie’s condition has since improved — and even happier that Tracey chose to stay with us as a volunteer! 🎉

You’ll find her every Wednesday at our youth club and now also with our Saturday Weekend Wanderers hiking group. 🚶‍♀️🗺️

Tracey says:
🗣️ “I like a bit of a challenge, and I enjoy interacting with young people — it gives me more of an insight and understanding into their lives.”

And as a bonus… because she has so many children, she has her very own 9-seater minibus — which means we can take even more young people on our adventures, alongside Kermit, our beloved 17-seater! 🚌💨

Thank you Tracey — your energy, empathy, and dedication make you such a valued member of the CYAG family. We’re so lucky to have you! 💛💪

Well deserved recognition of our superwoman Tracy Anderson 😍😍😍😍😍

😍😍😍😍Thanks so much to Alison and Barbara and family celebrating both their 70th birthdays this Bank Holiday weekend for their lovely feedback :

The cleanliness of the Centre was perfect. The helpfulness of the staff Couldn’t have been more helpful - splendid The facilities were again perfect, really good value Why did you choose us? Space range of facilities - our party age range was 4 weeks to late 70’s games room countryside enviornment cost half way(ish) between Edinburgh and Cambridge bedroom arrangements (not dormitories) ease of booking helpful staff on the end of the phone – nothing was too much trouble car parking dining tables enabling us all to eat together Is there anything that stood out for you over other Centres/accommodation? Value for money Outside environment Clarity of emails – on the day / key access etc

We had a blast….. you enabled us to celebrate a family birthday with ease and comfort thank you all - Ali 😍😍😍
