🚫🐶💦 Not All Dogs Can Swim! 💦🐶🚫

🤔We are looking at common misconceptions about hydrotherapy and dogs.

💦Hydrotherapy isn’t just for post-op pups or for dogs who love water; nor is it the same as taking your dog for a paddle in the local stream, (see Myth #3) 🚣‍♀️

🐩It is for any dog who needs safe and effective movement support to help them improve their quality of life.

❗HOWEVER, do not assume that all dogs can swim!

🐕Some breeds struggle due to body shape - especially flat faced breeds such as pugs and bulldogs.

🐶Senior dogs and puppies tire more easily and need to be monitored.

🐾Those with mobility issues need individual rehabilitation programmes and ongoing monitoring.

💦Hydrotherapy provides a safe, controlled environment with a trained hydrotherapist and safe pool.

💦 Limb deformity awareness post 💦 Woozelbears Hydrotherapy, Grooming and Spa
🐶 Rusty started hydrotherapy at the Melksham branch as a very small pup and has been with us ever since! He was born with a limb deformity in his right forelimb that prevents him from using it like a ‘normal dog’, he is unable to straighten his elbow and can not stand on it to bear weight 🐶
😎 His owners made the hard decision to keep the limb instead of a full amputation in the hopes that he would use it and ‘walk’. Unfortunately for Rusty, ‘walking’ on it isn’t something that is possible, however, using it to play, swim, balance, climb stairs and lean are all things he CAN do! 😎
💧So why does he attend hydrotherapy? Since he is unable to weight bear through his right arm his gait pattern and over all weight bearing is off. Hydrotherapy helps to reduce the compensatory issues that arise in his hindlimbs and left shoulder from the additional weight he caries through them. Swimming in the pool takes away the pressure on his joints and allows for greater range of motion! 💧
🐾 His treadmill sessions are spent playing with toys and static exercises which help to reduce stiffness in his joints as well as allowing him to play and be supported by the water! Since attending hydrotherapy he has better balance, greater muscle mass throughout, and the ability to be an amazing swimmer!! 🐾
🐾 He doesn’t let his condition slow him down, nor knock his confidence. He is full of life and keeps us all on our toes as we race him in the pool! 😋

#1 Hydrotherapy is not for my dog - HE IS AFRAID OF WATER 🤔⁉

📢 My dog has hip dysplasia - what do I do? 😢

Hip Dysplasia is a common joint issue, especially in large breeds. Signs include limping, stiffness, and trouble getting up or climbing stairs.

A diagnosis of hip dysplasia can feel like the end of the world for you and your pooch, especially when identified in a young puppy🦴

📖 However, do not despair there are options and this is what You Need to Know:

1️⃣ Surgery is usually for severe cases. Options include:
🩺 Total hip replacement (THR) - the entire joint is replaced with prosthetics
🩺 Femoral Head Osteotomy (FHO) - the ball at top of the hip bone is taken away and a "false" joint is created

2️⃣ Conservative management, involves:
🛠️ Weight management - cheapest, most effective way to slow the progression of the disease and deterioration of the joint
🛠️ Pain management - medication, laser therapy, joint supplements, other complementary alternatives
🛠️ Physical therapies
🩺 Hydrotherapy - to build muscle and keep the joint mobile
🩺 Physiotherapy - targeted muscle strengthening, massage and tension release

🫣Hope for Dogs with IVDD🐾

❓Does your dog have IVDD? Are you conservatively managing that condition?

🫣 Take a peak at how this beautiful Swiss Shepherd improved after only 10 sessions in the aquatic treadmill. In his first session, he struggled to stand and walk through the water.
