Hello! It's been a while since I've posted! Dental work took me a while to recover from, but I got there. The sunshine and brighter days are really helping me feel better.
The Easter holidays were lovely and busy. We managed to see some new faces as well as "old favourites". We even managed a family afternoon out at Banham zoo!
The kids are now back at school and I had every intention of sitting down with my emails this morning and getting the backlog of people wanting to book in done! However, technology is once again not on my side, and our booking system has gone down. (I have emailed them, and we are hoping it'll be fixed shortly).
From memory, we don't have any dates which are fully booked yet, and as soon as I can get online, I will be processing everything I can!

This is just a quick update to say I'm having dental surgery tomorrow and will likely be out of action for a week or so. Please direct any urgent enquiries to Jay's phone: 07759294747. All emails and WhatsApps to me will be handled, but a bit (dare I say "even"?) slower than usual!

At the moment, we have still got availability for all dates across the year, so please don't panic if we haven't got back to you instantly.

Meet the Team (part 5)

I struggled to choose a photo for this one. I really wanted to get a picture of me with some cats, or doing something "active", but for the vast majority of the time this is me, Heather! I'm sitting in bed, wearing comfy clothes, but still posting and doing what I can.

I started running the cattery in 2020, after needing to change careers from being a secondary school French teacher. During my "career sabbatical" I fostered cats in my spare bedroom and uncovered a love for all things feline. When the previous owners were selling TGC, it just seemed like everything was falling into place!

Whilst I can't do anywhere near as much of the hands-on stuff as I used to, I am still very much involved in the day-to-day running of the business. I love getting updates from Jay while he's working with the cats, and a large chunk of the "behind the scenes" admin parts are done by me too. This works with my illnesses, because I can do them in small doses, 15-20 minutes at a time.

My favourite things are listening to audiobooks, sitting in the garden with a cup of coffee, and cuddling cats. Days when I can combine all three activities are The Best!

Meet the Team (part 4)

This is Jack, and despite living here since 2024, he's never been into our garden! He is an old lad who spends most of his time asleep, unless there's the opportunity to meet new people for fuss. You may occasionally hear him barking if there are "too many" cars in the car park. You will probably see him through the kitchen window, curled up on one of our cat beds (apparently, if he fits, he sits!)

He's a very good boy and just wants to be friends with everyone, whether they are human or feline. He doesn't quite understand that not everyone wants to be friends with him, so that's why we keep him inside or out the front only.

His favourite things are cheese, sausage rolls, roast dinners and cuddles. Despite being a labrador/greyhound cross, he still thinks he's a lapdog and will happily sit on all of us for snuggles and a film.

Meet the Team!

Last but not least in our feline team, we have Cari. She's been here since she was a tiny kitten, who we didn't expect to survive the night. She was found face down in a puddle in someone's front garden, and they put a post on Facebook asking if anyone recognised her. They were going to leave her in a box in their woodshed, and I volunteered a heated lodge overnight, free of charge.
She turned out to have an awful wound on her leg, but after a lot of round-the-clock care (bathing her wound in saline every 2 hours for her first few days) and then a hefty course of antibiotics and two months of bandaging, not only did she survive, but she got to keep her leg too!
I wasn't intending to get another cat at the time, but Cari just had to stay.
She spends most of her time in the garden, unless it's really cold. She doesn't mind the rain, and often looks quite bedraggled. I promise she does have a loving home and access to several inside areas (including the green house).
She's often up high, either on the reception roof, or the roof of the isolation lodge on our patio. Don't be fooled by her plaintive miaows. She can get down by herself - she's not stuck!

Her favourite things are catching voles (she competes with Puddy over hunting rights), dreamies, tricking Jay into giving her a second breakfast (she tries to trip him up when he's carrying the breakfast tray, and anything which falls on the floor becomes her food!), and anything else food related. When she's tired from exploring the outside, she'll snuggle up on my lap and make the most contented purrs.

Meet the Team part two!

This is Puddy! She's often outside, and likes to "inspect" everyone who comes in and out of "her" garden. She can still be a bit of a grumpy old lady, but has mellowed out a lot since she joined our family. Once upon a time, she had a personal space bubble of about 2 metres, but now she will accept a little bit of fuss, on her own terms.
Be aware of fussing her - she looks friendly, but she does have a very short tolerance.

Her favourite things are piles of laundry to lounge in (never a cat bed!) sunbeams, catnip mice, freeze dried duck, and terrorising the voles who live under our shed.

Meet the Team!

This is Jambalaya, the most elusive of our three pet cats. She's most comfortable indoors, snuggling into a duvet, or finding a warm windowsill above the radiator.
Her favourite things are dreamies, naps, catnip mice, naps, second breakfast, naps, cuddles, and naps.
Her hunting prowess is limited to spiders and the occasional moth, but this doesn't stop her trying!

It snowed today!

All the cats have been safely tucked up in their heated cabins, with extra blankets.

Water bowls are in the cabins too, so they don't freeze.

We've also got microwave "Snuggle Safes" in all the lodges for extra warmth.

Hope you are all staying warm and cosy!

Wishing a very happy new year to all our customers, old and new!

2025 has been a hugely tricky year for us as a family, and I'm very glad to be seeing the back of it.

Thank you to each and every one of you who have trusted us with the care of your cats. Both to our existing clients who have seen a number of changes and keep coming back, and also all the new clients who have joined us this year. We wouldn't be here without you, so thank you!

I (Heather) have finally made a little bit of health progress after a year of spending around 20 hours a day in bed with ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis). During the summer months, I was unable to walk even as far as the cattery most days. I've now got an electric wheelchair, and a new medication which has helped my dizziness and palpitations hugely! I'm still hugely fatigued, and definitely overdid it over Christmas, but I've noticed a big improvement in my cognitive abilities and I can actually read and respond to one email at a time without getting a (literal) headache now!

Jay has done a wonderful job of taking over the day-to-day running of the business. He's kept me up to date with lots of photos and videos and has adapted so well to his new full time job. When he moved in with me, he said "I'll clean a few litter trays, but it's your business. I don't want to get involved..." how wrong we were!

There were understandably a lot of issues over the first few months while Jay and I were adapting to our new reality. The nature of small businesses is that when one team member goes down, it's a bit of a scramble behind the scenes to continue everything running smoothly.

We prioritised the care of cats who were booked to stay with us, and we were slower with admin. Given the same set of circumstances again, with the knowledge we had, we'd make the same choices. When I got poorly, none of us recognised how unwell I was, and how long it would last. Thank you for sticking with us!

Looking forward to 2026, what are we hoping for?

Obviously, continued stability to my health. Since I started my new meds, I've been able to get into the cattery most days, and have even been spotted sweeping and scooping litter! Even though I can't lift a litter tray, I can definitely provide "enrichment" to the cats, and I'm sure we'll be able to help each other. Settling them in and making the cats feel loved is a huge part of what we do, and I'm excited to be well enough to do it again!

Quicker responses to emails, and actually fixing the Internet and phone issues. Delegating the admin didn't work out for us, but adding in the online booking for returning customers has been a big help. We still don't have a working landline number, but we can be reached by WhatsApp or text to either 07759294747 (Jay) or 078 24 079653 (Heather).

More social media posts. I used to do a mealtime video story, and I miss doing this! I actually love photography and taking the time to get to know the cats and get them relaxed enough for good photos was a real privilege. Now I can read and write again, I hope to be a bit more active! Showing you what we do, and why we do it is so important to your continued trust in us.

I hope that 2026 is a gentle year for all of us, and brings us all peace and happiness.

APRIL UPDATE!

I've been living with Myalgic Encephalitis /Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia for a while now, and whilst I'm still not out of the "crash" that originally sparked the diagnosis I am happy to say that I am now doing a lot better, mentally and physically. Thank you to all the people who have sent me well wishes and a speedy recovery!

It's been a big challenge over the winter months to have to outsource everything for the cattery on such short notice, and I'm really grateful for everything that so many people have done to rally around me.

I'd been feeling "kinda tired" for a few months through summer and autumn, but there were always things to be done, and of course, everyone is tired! Running my own business, being a stepmum, adjusting to new routines as a family... Of course I was tired.

Then, at the beginning of December, I just stopped being able to stand up. You know that lightheaded feeling when you stand up a bit quickly? That, but for every time I tried to stand or walk, even slowly. Lifting anything heavier than a kilo? Instant breathlessness. Stairs? I needed to lie down for 20 minutes with my feet up to avoid fainting. I would regularly get palpitations throughout my whole body that left me in pain and feeling exhausted, like I'd run a marathon. It's hard to explain all my symptoms (I could write a whole book) but overnight I became severely disabled.

I spent most of January, February and March in bed, sleeping or resting for around 16 hours a day. Taking that time off has helped and, I'm starting to feel a little bit more like my old self again. I still spend most of my days lying down, but I am feeling more well than a few months ago. Most days of the week, I can now climb the stairs and only sit for five minutes to avoid fainting rather than lying down. Simple things continue to exhaust me, and I'm not "better" yet. It will be a while before I'm able to stand long enough to dish out the meals for cats, clean a lodge or even scoop the litter trays.

Jay, my partner, has done a fantastic job of taking over the daily routines of looking after the cats. I get regular updates of how the cats are all doing, and I'm happy to hear about the cats doing well. Sometimes I feel well enough to walk down the garden to give the cats some fuss, but this doesn't happen as often as I'd like.

Considering Jay was only ever meant to be a part time worker so I could have a few hours off each week, he's adapted brilliantly to this new role, as well as having his partner no longer able to do any of the housework or driving.

From listening to our client feedback, the biggest problem area seems to be getting in touch with us. Our Internet provider is simply not up to the job, and because our phoneline comes through the Internet, we can't take or receive calls on our land-line at the moment.

Please drop a text or WhatsApp to: +44 7759 294747 (Jay) or +44 7824 079653 (Heather). We will be updating these numbers everywhere they're published!

For me personally, text-based communication is a lot easier than an actual conversation. I don't like admitting it, but talking is a very fatiguing activity, and so is multi-tasking.

Emails have been another big problem area, with an over-aggressive spam filter meaning we haven't received some of the messages, and delays in me having the ability to string more than two sentences together which are spelled correctly. Outsourcing the emails hasn't worked as well as I'd hoped, so I've made some staffing changes and I'm taking these back in-house again. It's not going to be easy, but I am hopeful that I can get our response times to within 2-3 working days, rather than the 2-3 weeks which some of our clients have been experiencing.

If you are able to use the automatic booking request form on our website, this puts the information directly onto our booking system and is much easier for us.

I'm feeling very vulnerable at the moment, and I'm hoping that by sharing some of the issues we've had, as well as the things we are doing to "put it right", we will continue to show that we have your cat(s) best interests at heart.

Jay and I adore running The Garden Cattery and we hope to be here for many more years to come.

Big Update!

Heather is having some pretty major health issues at the moment, so she's taking a temporary step back from running the cattery!

Most of you will already have met Jay who is going to be holding the reins over this year. It's not a decision we've taken lightly, but it's the best way to help Heather to get better!

She'll still be around to fuss cats (on good days) and still living on-site, but all of the day-to-day work is going to be delegated out to a fantastic team of people!

- If you email the cattery, the lovely Philippa (our newest addition to the team) will be answering your emails. Philippa will also be running the social media too!
- During the university holidays, Natalie will be here to do check ins and outs.
- At weekends, we've got Amelia helping to clean lodges and litter trays.
- Everything else will be run by Jay!

We hope to make this as smooth a transition as possible - our team has been carefully chosen to meet the high standards that you expect from us. If you've got any questions, please let us know!
