November is Senior Pet Care Awareness Month 🐾💛

At Builth Vets Rehab, we’re celebrating our wonderful “golden oldies” and raising awareness of how physiotherapy and hydrotherapy can help senior pets stay active, comfortable, and happy.

As pets age, changes in mobility can be subtle — slowing down on walks, avoiding stairs, or hesitating to jump or play. These small signs can indicate stiffness or discomfort, but gentle therapies can make a genuine difference.

Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy can help with:
🌊 Reduced pain and stiffness
💪 Safe, low-impact muscle building
❤️ Improved circulation and healing
🐕‍🦺 Increased confidence and more comfortable movement

With the right support, senior pets can enjoy a better quality of life for years to come.

If you’d like to arrange a check-up or consultation, our experienced team can create a personalised plan tailored to your pet’s needs.

If you have any questions, give us a call on 01982 553271.

Meet Orla – October’s Dog of the Month! (A little late due to a Facebook glitch!)

Orla, a four-year-old Golden Retriever, visits our rehab centre for bilateral hip dysplasia and secondary osteoarthritis management. She loves human attention, so hydrotherapy—especially hands-on Underwater Treadmill sessions—is perfect for her.

Despite her conditions, Orla is thriving, full of energy, and even more playful since starting regular therapy. She and her sister Ruby keep life lively at home!

🐾🦴 Joint & Bone Week Focus: Cranial Cruciate Ligament Disease 🦴🐾

If your dog is suddenly limping or struggling with stairs, they could be dealing with cranial cruciate ligament disease — one of the most common causes of lameness in dogs.

The cruciate ligament helps keep the knee joint stable. When it becomes worn or tears, it can lead to pain, instability, and eventually arthritis — especially in breeds like Labradors, Rottweilers, and Boxers.

🧐 Look out for:
• A limp that comes and goes
• Trouble getting up or climbing stairs
• Stiffness after rest
• Less interest in walks or play

Some dogs will need surgery, while others can be managed with rehab, pain relief, and the right kind of exercise.

💧 Whether your dog has had surgery or not, our Rehabilitation & Conditioning Centre offers:
✔️ Hydrotherapy
✔️ Physiotherapy
✔️ Home exercise plans
✔️ Post-op recovery support

📞 If you’re worried about your dog’s movement, or your vet has mentioned cruciate issues, give us a call on 01982 553271 — we’re here to help them move more comfortably again.

🦴🐾 Is Your Dog Showing Signs of Arthritis?

Arthritis is common in dogs — especially as they age — but it often goes unnoticed. They don’t cry or yelp… they just adapt.

What might seem like “getting older” could actually be chronic pain.

Signs to watch for:
🔹 Slowing down on walks
🔹 Hesitating with stairs or jumping
🔹 Stiffness after rest
🔹 Limping or licking joints
🔹 Sleeping more or playing less
🔹 Changes in behaviour or mood

Early signs are subtle, but they matter.

Let’s keep those tails wagging — pain-free. 💙🐾

🐾 Bone and Joint Action Week — Not Just for Humans!

Just like us, dogs and cats can suffer from arthritis, joint pain, injuries, and mobility issues. At Builth Vets Rehabilitation and Conditioning Centre, we're using this week to raise awareness of common orthopedic conditions in pets — and how rehabilitation therapy can improve their comfort, movement, and quality of life.

Common Bone & Joint Disorders in Pets:

- Osteoarthritis
- Hip Dysplasia
- Elbow Dysplasia
- Luxating Patella
- Cruciate Ligament Injuries

➡️ Many other conditions can affect bones, joints, muscles, and movement — all of which can impact your pet’s wellbeing.

Signs Your Pet Might Need Help:

- Limping or lameness
- Difficulty getting up or lying down
- Reluctance to jump, run, or climb stairs
- Stiffness after rest or exercise
- Muscle loss or reduced activity
- Changes in behaviour (e.g. irritability or withdrawal)

🔍 Noticing these signs? It might be time for a mobility assessment.

📍 Book your pet’s assessment at Builth Vets Rehabilitation and Conditioning Centre by calling us on 01982 553271.

Let’s keep your pets happy, active, and pain-free — this week and beyond.

Hattie’s Story 🐾

Meet Hattie, our Dog of the Month for September!

This precious and chatty Labrador has shown incredible resilience on her road to recovery.
In August, just weeks after major knee surgery, Hattie began hydrotherapy. She had injured herself leaping a fence on the farm, rupturing two major ligaments — a painful setback for such an active girl.

Post-surgery, she struggled to bear weight and lost a lot of muscle, with her left hind leg measuring 7 cm smaller than the other. But since starting hydro, Hattie has already regained 4 cm of muscle, is moving with confidence, and is back to her mischievous, playful self.

She still has a little way to go, but her progress has been amazing — and she’s completely stolen our hearts. 💛

Did you know? 🐶

One of the most powerful and beneficial properties of water is hydrostatic pressure. This simple yet effective characteristic plays a key role in supporting the body during hydrotherapy.

Hydrostatic pressure helps reduce tissue swelling by positively influencing the lymphatic drainage system, while also improving cardiovascular function, blood circulation, and supporting tissue recovery.

It also contributes to pain relief. The gentle, continuous pressure exerted by water on the animal’s body creates a neurological response that helps decrease the sensation of pain in affected areas—an incredible natural form of pain management.🐾

Combined with other properties of water like buoyancy, resistance, and viscosity, hydrostatic pressure can greatly enhance an animal's cardiovascular health, mobility, and overall comfort during rehabilitation.

Meet Moss – our very charming patient!🐾

Moss is currently with us for rehabilitation following surgery for spinal compression in his neck – a condition that turned his active world upside down earlier this year.

He’s been making fantastic progress so far, thanks to his determined spirit, daily physio, and ongoing hydrotherapy and acupuncture sessions.

Our team is working closely with Moss to help him regain strength, mobility, and confidence – and we’re thrilled to see him back to enjoying his favourite activity: playing ball! 🎾

We’ll be sharing more of Moss’s story as he continues his recovery journey – so keep an eye out for updates!

Seren’s Story 🐾

Meet Seren, our Dog of the Month for August!

This sweet Westie is not even a year old, but she’s already shown incredible strength and spirit.

Diagnosed with Legg-Calve-Perthes disease as a puppy, Seren needed surgery on her right hip (a femoral head and neck ostectomy). It was a big procedure, but she’s bounced back brilliantly.

Since starting hydrotherapy just five weeks ago, Seren has built up her muscles, improved her movement, and can now enjoy longer walks without discomfort. Despite never having been in the water before, she took to hydro like a natural!

She’s a bundle of love, joy, and energy — and we couldn’t be prouder of her progress.

Hydrotherapy for Large Breeds – gentle exercise, big benefits! 💧🐾

Did you know that regular hydrotherapy is a fantastic, low-impact way to keep your large breed dog healthy and mobile?

Due to their larger body structure, heavy bones, and increased muscle mass, these gentle giants often experience extra wear and tear on their joints. This can lead to issues like reduced range of motion, inflammation, discomfort – and common conditions such as elbow and hip dysplasia or Osteochondritis Dissecans (a joint cartilage disorder causing pain and stiffness)

That’s why it’s so important to be mindful of exercise routines, especially during those crucial puppy growth stages.

Hydrotherapy offers the perfect solution – helping to gently build muscle, support joint health, and keep your dog strong, active, and happy… all without adding extra strain to their bodies.

Just look at Rollo, our magnificent Alaskan Malamute, and Red, our solid Dogue de Bordeaux, loving their swim sessions! 🐶💦
