Meet Ralph – A Familiar Face at Builth Vets!

Ralph came in for a physiotherapy check-up, where we picked up on some muscular tension. He then enjoyed some laser therapy and massage to help ease things out – not a bad way to spend the day!

He’s looked after by Meg, one of our receptionists, who’s keeping him in great shape with regular visits.

Proprioception and Hydrotherapy – Do They Work?

Did you know that proprioception allows us to perceive the movement, position, and actions of our bodies. Proprioception is essential for body awareness, balance, posture, and motor control. Sounds pretty important, right?

When dogs experience reduced proprioception, they may struggle with basic movements such as walking, placing their paws correctly, or may even drag their feet. Balancing can also become difficult for them.

Over the years, canine hydrotherapy has been recognized as an incredibly effective tool for improving a dog's proprioception. It's not just the properties of water—such as hydrostatic pressure and surface tension—that are beneficial. A variety of amazing techniques and equipment can be used to stimulate a dog’s motor and sensory systems. These techniques enhance proprioceptive feedback, speeding up and improving the rehabilitation process. Different textures, hands-on stimulation, varied pressure, and gentle balance exercises all help dogs become more aware of their body and its functions.

Canine hydrotherapy truly is an amazing rehabilitation tool! 🌊🐾

Meet Ada – One of Our Sweetest Regulars! 🐶

Ada visits us regularly for physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to help manage bilateral luxating patella – a condition where her kneecaps can slip out of place on both sides.

Thanks to her sessions, she’s building strength, improving mobility, and staying as active and comfortable as possible. She takes everything in her stride and always brings a gentle charm to the clinic.

As you can see, Ada enjoys her peaceful laser treatment, and of course, the post-session treats and fuss are always a bonus – which we’re more than happy to provide!

April is Canine Fitness Month! 🐾

At Builth Vets Rehabilitation & Conditioning Centre, we're all about helping your pets stay strong, mobile, and happy—so this is the perfect time to shine a light on simple ways you can support your dog’s fitness at home.

Here are a few easy exercises you can try:

Controlled, slow lead walking
This encourages even weight-bearing on all limbs, strengthens key muscle groups, and acts as a great warm-up before off-lead time.

Cavaletti poles
Great for improving joint mobility, coordination, balance, and body awareness. No poles at home? No problem—walking your dog through long grass works well too!

Gentle hill walking or gradual gradients
These help build hindlimb strength and support overall conditioning.

Walking on varied surfaces
Different textures like grass, tarmac, or gravel challenge your dog’s muscles in new ways. Softer surfaces can also help reduce joint impact, especially in dogs with arthritis.

If you have any questions or would like tailored advice for your dog, our team is always here to help. Don’t hesitate to get in touch or book a consultation.

Let’s keep our dogs moving better, for longer! 💪🐶

Meet Max, Our Star of the Month for March! 🌟🐾

Max, our brave and determined 14-year-old dog, has shown incredible resilience throughout his rehabilitation journey, and we’re so proud of him!

In August 2024, Max began regular hydrotherapy to help improve his muscle tone and strength. Unfortunately, within the past ten months, Max experienced two Vestibular Syndrome attacks—causing a sudden loss of balance and coordination. This condition, common in older dogs, severely affects the balance system in the inner ear and brain. Max’s attacks even led to a loss of use in his hind limbs.

Despite these challenges, Max has remained a fighter. He’s now back on his feet, working hard every day on his recovery and strength. The buoyancy of the underwater treadmill has been a fantastic tool in supporting dogs with balance issues and weakness in their limbs, helping Max regain his confidence and mobility.

Max’s determination proves that nothing can stop this sweet boy from bouncing back! 🐶💪

Give Your Dog a Helping Paw on the Road!

Did you know that protecting your dog’s joints early on can help avoid pain later? Whether your dog’s a bouncy pup or a wise old furball, you can help save those joints from extra wear and tear.

The Car Jump: Not So Fun for Their Joints

Jumping in and out of the car puts SIX times your dog’s weight on their front legs! Ouch, right? This can cause joint pain, muscle strain, and even fractures over time—especially for older dogs.

The Fix?

Try a foldable ramp, non-slip steps, or just give your dog a lift! It’s an easy way to protect those paws and keep them comfy while traveling. Senior dogs will love the extra help!

Meet Barney, Our Star of the Month for February! 🌟🐾

Barney, our sweet and mischievous Cocker Spaniel, has shown incredible progress thanks to his dedication to his health and rehabilitation journey.

A few months ago, Barney was struggling with hip dysplasia and was in serious need of weight loss to help with his comfort and mobility. In May 2024, he was only able to manage short walks, often stopping to sit down and refuse to go any further. His joints were causing him discomfort, and his muscle definition was lacking for his age.

With frequent hydrotherapy sessions, home-based physio exercises, a very strict diet, and structured walks, Barney has made incredible strides. Over the course of six months, his waist shrank from 54 cm to 44 cm, his hind limbs have toned and defined by an average of 3 cm, and his weight dropped from over 17 kg to under 15 kg!

Barney is now full of energy and joy, tearing around with enthusiasm, and no longer unhappy during his walks.

We're so proud of Barney's transformation, and his journey is truly a testament to resilience, effort, and love! 🐶💙

Meet Inca and Lola, Our Gorgeous Labrador Duo! 🐕💙

Inca (8 years) and Lola (16.5 years) are no strangers to our hydrotherapy and physiotherapy centre. As Labrador Retrievers, they’ve faced some of the orthopedic challenges common to their breed.

Inca has been living well with elbow dysplasia for several years, staying active and happy thanks to regular treatment. Lola, however, has been dealing with arthritis and muscle wastage, which have slowed her down, but her spirit remains strong.

Both girls absolutely love their hydrotherapy sessions! We suspect it might have something to do with the tasty treats they get afterward 🐶 Lab speed at its finest! But beyond the fun, their treatment plan helps them stay active and comfortable as they age.

We’re so proud of both Inca and Lola for their progress, and we admire the dedication of their owners in supporting them through their rehabilitation. These girls are truly a testament to resilience and love! 💙🐾

🐾🎉 Star of the Month: Meet Bran! 🎉🐾

We’re beyond proud to announce our Star of the Month—the incredible Bran! 🐶✨

Rescued from Romania in 2022, Bran faced a tough start when he suffered an intervertebral disc herniation (IVDD), leaving him unable to use his back legs. After a successful surgery in April 2023, he made a strong recovery—only to face another setback in early 2024. Bran’s condition had worsened requiring a second surgery.
Diagnosed with stage 5 IVDD, Bran was given a low chance of recovery. He was unable to feel either of his back feet and it was likely he would never be able to walk again. Thankfully due to Brans determination, along with the unwavering support of his devoted owners, he has made amazing progress. Despite his dislike for water (hydrotherapy wasn’t his thing!), Bran’s physiotherapy journey has been a success. He can now walk short distances, has feeling in both back legs, and best of all—he’s wagging his tail again! 🌟

Bran’s road to recovery is ongoing, but we couldn’t be more inspired by his strength and his owners' dedication. Keep going, Bran—you’re a true warrior! 💖

🐾 Let’s Talk About Overgrown Nails and Your Dog’s Health 🐾

Did you know your dog’s nails are an important part of their overall well-being? They are connected to the last bone in their foot and help with traction, while also providing your dog’s brain with crucial feedback about the position of their feet in relation to the environment.

When nails become overgrown, they can alter the angle of your dog’s toes, which increases pressure on their joints and ligaments. This can lead to posture issues, altered movement, and potentially cause injuries or joint problems.

Overgrown nails also remain in constant contact with the floor, putting pressure on the bone in their paw (P3), which can lead to discomfort. Long nails and excess hair around the pads reduce traction on slippery surfaces, making your dog more likely to slip and strain muscles or joints.

🩺 Regular nail and pad hair care is essential, especially for dogs with conditions like osteoarthritis or poor proprioception. It can greatly improve your dog’s comfort and overall quality of life.

If you feel your dog’s posture has been affected by poorly maintained nails, consider booking a physiotherapy session to address any asymmetry and help correct their posture.

If you’re unsure how to trim your dog’s nails, why not book your pet a pedicure with one of our nurses today! 💅

Meet Bonnie, Little Mae, and Merlin – our retired agility stars who’ve lived active and competitive lives in the agility world. Now enjoying their well-deserved retirement, they have embraced a more relaxed lifestyle with regular treatments to keep them feeling their best.

Bonnie, who has arthritis, receives ongoing care through hydrotherapy, gentle physiotherapy, and laser treatment to maintain her mobility and comfort. Mae, with her focus on muscle tone, enjoys her regular sessions to ensure her strength doesn’t diminish with age.

Merlin, the youngest of the trio, also benefits from laser therapy, particularly when experiencing muscular tension in his lower back. He’s especially fond of the attention that comes with his treatment, and he loves being the center of attention! 🐶

These wonderful dogs bring so much joy to our rehab center, and it’s always a full house when they’re here! We love helping them thrive and continue to live their best, mobile, and happy lives in retirement. 🐩❤️
