☀️ HOT WEATHER ADVICE FOR DOG OWNERS ☀️
With the upcoming heat wave, it’s so important to help keep our dogs safe, cool, and comfortable. Dogs can overheat very quickly, especially brachycephalic breeds, older dogs, puppies, and dogs with thick coats.
🐾 Top tips to keep your dog cool:
• Walk early morning or later in the evening
• Always provide fresh, cool water
• Avoid hot pavements — if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws
• Use cooling mats, shaded areas, or paddling pools
• Never leave dogs in cars, even for a few minutes
• Watch for signs of heatstroke: excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or collapse
✂️ A quick note about shaving coats short in summer:
Many people think clipping a dog extremely short will keep them cooler, but this isn’t always the case. A dog’s coat actually helps regulate body temperature and can also help protect the skin from sunburn and overheating.
What IS important is regular grooming and preventing matting.
⚠️ Matted coats trap heat close to the skin, restrict airflow, and can become very uncomfortable and painful for dogs in warm weather. Severe matting can leave us with no choice but to clip shorter than owners may like — purely for the dog’s welfare.
Dogs clipped extremely short can also be more exposed to the sun, increasing the risk of sensitive skin and sunburn.
Keeping your dog on a regular grooming schedule helps maintain a healthy coat that can properly do its job during both hot and cold weather ❤️
Please keep your pups safe and comfortable during the heat ☀️🐶
