☀️HEATSTROKE☀️

⚠️🦮Please be careful taking your dog for a walk in this heat.

⛔️❗️Even a ‘quick’ walk can be too much!

🖐🏻Remember hot pavements can burn paws! If it’s too hot to hold your hand down on, it’s too hot for your pet!

🐾📞If you are concerned your pet might have heat stroke please do not delay and phone your veterinary practice ASAP for professional advice.

🐶DOGS🐶

☀️Make sure they have access to the shade if outdoors, ideally keep them inside.
☀️Have access to cool fresh water throughout the day.
☀️NEVER leave your dog in a car
☀️Use cool mats, fans, wet towels for your pet to lie on.
☀️Use pet safe suncream on exposed parts of your pets skin (tips of ears and nose). Especially if your pet has white/light coloured fur.
☀️Be careful if you have artificial grass, this can cause burns to your pets feet

🐱CATS🐱

☀️Offer them cool water and replenish frequently
☀️Ensure your cats do not get trapped in sheds, conservatory’s, garages or green houses
☀️Keep them indoors where possible, in a cool ventilated room.

🐰SMALL FURRIES🐹

☀️Ensure to keep their enclosure out of direct sunlight. Move the accommodation into an area that has plenty of shade and air circulation.
☀️Offer them marble/slate/tiles/concrete slabs to lay on. You can refrigerate these and they make great cool spots for them to sit on. Cool mats work too- however make sure they don’t get nibbled!
☀️Offer them fresh cool water to drink, and replenish regularly.
☀️Wrap a frozen bottle in a tea towel and place it in their pen, it may help to reduce the air temperature
☀️Try not to handle them/fuss them too much.
☀️Please be vigilant for cases of flystrike in your rabbits.

🦔WILDLIFE🐝
Spare a thought for wild animals. Keep bowls of water out for wildlife such as birds and hedgehogs!

Signs of heatstroke:
🥵Panting excessively
🥵Breathing difficulties
🥵Excessively salivation/drooling
🥵Vomiting (dogs & cats)
🥵Restlessness
🥵Collapse
🥵Seizures
🥵Red gums

❗️ALL animals are at risk of heatstroke, although some more than others. These include:

🐾Brachycephalic breeds (Pugs, Shih Tzu, French Bulldogs etc)
🐾Puppies
🐾Geriatric dogs
🐾Overweight dogs
🐾Dogs with thick coats
🐾Animals with underlying health conditions

🌡If you suspect your dog is showing signs of heatstroke⬇️

DO
✅Move your dog to a cool/shaded area.
✅ Gently use COOL not cold water over their body.
✅Offer them small amounts of water to drink
✅Call your vets immediately if you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke

DON’T
⛔️Do not cover their body with a wet towel, this will trap the heat in.
⛔️Do not force your pet to drink, as this may lead to them aspirating, and this can cause aspiration pneumonia.
⛔️Do not use COLD/ICE water, this can cool your pet down too rapidly leading to shock.

It’s another scorching week ☀️

During hot spells, stick to dawn or dusk walks and keep your pets cool at home with activities such as frozen treats or a paddling pool🌊

Remember: when in doubt - don't go out.

🌾GRASS SEEDS🌾

Grass seeds have been a real problem recently for several of our canine patients this week!

Grass seeds, from certain kinds of grasses, are hard, pointed seed heads. They first attach to the animal’s fur, using minuscule barbs – and can then work their way into the skin, or into the nose, ears and eyes, for example, causing discomfort and potentially worse – including infections.

In the most serious cases, surgery may be required to remove them.

👀Signs to watch out for:

🐾Licking feet
🐾Pain
🐾Discomfort walking
🐾Do check your dog over carefully after walks.

👀Areas to focus on include:

❌Between the toes and pads
❌Mouth and eyes
❌In Ears
❌Armpits
❌Groin

☀️In the summer and early autumn, it’s best to keep dogs out of fields that have a lot of grass seeds, especially when they are dry.

If your dog starts shaking their head, holding their head to one side, scratching at their ear and/or seems painful it maybe due to a seed at this time of year!

Prompt treatment is essential so please contact the surgery if you suspect this!

🤩THE WINNER OF OUR JULY BRAVEHEART AWARD IS MILLIE🤩

Millie has been coming to Broughton since April 2024 when her owner brought her in to have a lump checked on one of her mammaries checked🧐. We removed the lump shortly after and Millie recovered well🥳. Then in April of this year Millie returned with another mammary lump, but during her consultation with the vet a second lump the opposite side was found😔. Millie attended the practice for another surgery later that month, and whilst anaesthetised the vets checked every teat for masses🧑‍⚕️.
Unfortunatley, they 3 lumps on her left side and 2 on her right side. This now meant major surgery for Millie which would have to be split into 2 parts🩹.The first part was removing all of Millie's mammary glands on the left side (known as a mammary strip). This surgery left Millie with a very large wound that needed to heal before the second part, a strip of the mammaries on the right side, could be performed. Millie's first surgery was successful and she had a smooth recovery, meaning she could come back into us this month for her second surgery. Millie's second surgery went well, although again she has another large wound to heal. Her recovery is still ongoing with a set-back at the start when her wound opened up slightly. Millie is still doing well and continuing to show her resilience and strength🥺🫶🏻

🏆The team believes Millie is very deserving of the Braveheart award as she has now undergone 2 huge surgies within the space of 3 months and still continues to be the most loveable, friendly girl every time she steps her paws into the practice. Millie has shown incredible bravery throughout her surgeries and recoveries, and continues to show strength and fight during her current recovery. She has never shown any complaint throughout her visits to the practice, even after numerous general anaesthetics🥇

💙Please join us in saying WELL DONE Millie and get well soon💙
