As the temperatures drop, many of us start using antifreeze in our cars… but did you know it’s one of the most dangerous autumn toxins for pets?
Antifreeze (which contains ethylene glycol) is often sweet-tasting to cats and dogs, but cats are most sensitive meaning even one teaspoon can be fatal.

Key precautions:
❄️ Store antifreeze well out of reach
❄️ Clean up any spills immediately
❄️ Don’t let your pet drink from puddles or driveways
❄️ Use pet-safe antifreeze and screen wash wherever possible

Conkers are a classic part of autumn, but they pose a serious risk to our pets - especially curious dogs who love to pick things up with their mouths.

👉 Conkers can cause tummy upsets, blockages, and even contain toxic compounds can be harmful if ingested. They're also a choking hazard, particularly for smaller dogs.

So, while they’re fun for kids to collect, it’s best to steer your dog away from conkers during walks.

🧥 Stay Warm: Ensure your pet is comfortable and warm with appropriate clothing, especially if they have short fur
⚠️ Watch Out for Hazards: Be mindful of fallen leaves, which can hide potential dangers like sharp objects or holes
🦮 Stay on Leash: With wildlife more active, keep your pet on a leash to prevent unexpected chases
💧 Hydrate: Bring water for your pet, as they can still get thirsty even in cooler weather
✅ Check for Ticks: Ticks may still be active in October so keep up your tick checks after each walk

These hard shiny seeds contain a toxin called aesculin, which can make your dog sick or give them an upset stomach. Conkers are also large and hard and may cause your dog to choke on them, or could block their stomach and gut!

Regular health check-ups are important for the long-term health and welfare of all pets! Dogs are routinely vaccinated against Distemper, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, Hepatitis and Parainfluenza. The initial puppy course is two injections given two to four weeks apart depending on the age when the first injection was given. After this, your dog will need annual vaccinations.

There are countless benefits to vaccinating your dogs and cats, and the number one reason is to give you peace of mind that they are protected against life-threatening and painful diseases.
