🐾 Cat Found – Please Share 🐾
A female, long-haired black and white cat (with a white chest) was brought into the clinic yesterday after being found in a very poorly condition near the Milk Street flats. Sadly, she has since passed away. 💔
She was scanned for a microchip, but unfortunately it is not registered, so we have been unable to trace her owners.
If you believe this may be your cat, or you recognise her from the description, please contact the clinic directly.
We would greatly appreciate you sharing this post to help us find her family and bring them some closure during this difficult time.

🌱 Signs of spring… but winter isn’t done yet ❄️🦔

We’re starting to see little hints that spring is on its way – longer days, snowdrops appearing, and birds singing more confidently 🎶
But cold snaps are still very much part of UK weather, and wildlife can easily be caught out.

Animals may become more active, thinking warmer days have arrived, only to struggle when temperatures suddenly drop again.

You can still help by:

🐦 Putting out high-energy foods such as fat balls, sunflower hearts, peanuts, mealworms, and suet blocks

💧 Checking water bowls daily and removing ice so wildlife can drink

🏡 Leaving gardens a little messy – leaf piles, log stacks, and hedges make excellent shelter

🦔 Keeping an eye out for hedgehogs that may wake early and need extra support

Spring is on its way… just not quite yet 🌼
Until then, a little extra care can make a big difference for our wild neighbours. Please share to help spread the word 💚

Many pet owners believe fleas disappear in winter—but fleas are very much a year-round problem, especially for pets living in warm homes.

❄️ Why fleas survive in winter:

• Central heating creates the perfect indoor environment
• Fleas can live happily in carpets, bedding and sofas
• Pets still pick up fleas on walks, in gardens and communal areas
• Milder UK winters mean fewer fleas die off outdoors

Just one flea can lead to a household infestation before you realise it.

🐾 Signs your pet may have fleas:

🔍 Scratching or biting at the skin
🔍 Hair loss or scabs, especially around the back end
🔍 Red, sore or irritated skin
🔍 “Flea dirt” (black specks in the coat that turn red when wet)

Cats in particular can be tricky—many groom fleas away, so skin problems may be the first sign.

⚠️ Why winter prevention matters:

• Fleas can trigger flea allergic dermatitis
• Heavy infestations can cause skin infections
• Fleas carry tapeworm
• Treating an infestation is far more difficult (and costly) than preventing one

💊 Our advice:

✔️ Use vet-recommended flea treatment all year round
✔️ Treat all pets in the household
✔️ Stick to a regular schedule—missed doses leave gaps
✔️ Ask us before using shop-bought products (some are ineffective or unsafe)

If your pet is itchy and you’re not sure why, or if you’d like help choosing the right flea protection, our team is happy to advise 💙

📞 Give us a call or book aN appointment—we’re here to help keep your pets comfortable and itch-free.

During the colder, darker months, many cats become less active and more food-motivated—especially indoor cats. While a little extra snuggliness is normal, winter weight gain can creep up without being noticed.

❄️ Why winter weight gain happens:

• Shorter days = less natural activity
• Cold weather = more sleeping, less moving
• Boredom leads to grazing or begging
• Extra treats (because… cute 😅)

Even small weight gains can increase the risk of:
⚠️ Arthritis and joint pain
⚠️ Diabetes
⚠️ Reduced mobility and confidence
⚠️ Shorter life expectancy

🐾 Easy ways to keep indoor cats active:

✔️ Feed little and often using puzzle feeders
✔️ Scatter dry food to encourage natural foraging
✔️ Short play sessions (5–10 mins) 2–3 times daily
✔️ Rotate toys to keep them “new”
✔️ Use vertical space—shelves, cat trees, window perches

🍽️ Food matters too:

Portion sizes often need adjusting during winter. If your cat is less active, they may need fewer calories, even if they’re asking for more food!

If you’re unsure:
📏 We’re happy to do free weight checks
💬 Our nurses can advise on diet, portions and enrichment
🐾 Small changes now can make a big difference long term

If your cat feels heavier, struggles to groom, or seems less keen to jump and play, get in touch—we’re here to help 💙

Muddy walks are part of winter life in the UK… but muddy paws can cause real problems if they’re not cleaned properly.

After wet or muddy walks, dirt and moisture can get trapped:
• Between the toes
• Around the nail beds
• In long fur on the feet

This can lead to:
❌ Sore, red or itchy paws
❌ Licking or chewing feet
❌ Infections between the toes
❌ Slipping on hard floors at home

🧼 Our simple paw-care tips:

✔️ Rinse or wipe paws after every muddy walk
✔️ Dry thoroughly, especially between toes
✔️ Trim excess fur around feet if possible
✔️ Check regularly for redness, swelling or discharge

If your dog is licking their paws more than usual, or you notice a smell, soreness or limping, it’s best to get them checked early—paw infections can worsen quickly.

📞 If you’re worried, give us a call or book an appointment. We’re happy to help keep those paws comfy 💙🐕
