Watch me critique my own dog!
Prescriptive exercises are arguably one of the most important parts of physiotherapy. They help gain strength, symmetry and build the foundation for improved functional movement. BUT, they are also useful for assessing areas of weakness, asymmetry or discomfort. We can use them to track progress and help localise problem areas.
Patty has been doing a whole range of exercises since a puppy, but after a recent episode of lameness and rest, I used this short session of basic exercises that she’s normally very comfortable with, to assess where we are in her recovery. Although she’s back to her normal walks, and is moving in a much better way, this session highlighted that she might not be feeling as well as she’s looking! Time for a follow up

Last September, Rio tore his right cranial cruciate ligament. He had intensive physiotherapy and recovered incredibly well, only to rupture his left CCL at the end of the year. At 10 years old, with arthritis and being a larger breed, his owner faced the option of euthanasia and opted to commit to conservative rehabilitation. His recovery has been fantastic.
Rio’s one of the cases I am most proud of, mostly down to the dedication of his lovely owner.
Physiotherapy is never about achieving perfection, it’s about striving for comfort, functionality and quality of life, with any injury/condition and any age.
Love you, Ri 🤍

Happy bank holiday weekend!
With temperatures rising, make sure you keep your pets nice and cool. This will likely mean adjusting your schedule to get out early or late for walks, bringing your horses in during the day if they have no shade, and providing additional means for your animals to stay nice and cool.
Hosing off, paddle pools, cool mats and ice lollies all around here this weekend. 😎

My favourite kind of case 🤍
⭐ patient of this week is Saxon.
Saxon is a 1 year old (tomorrow!) Sheparnese with hip dysplasia. He can be very nervous with new people and particularly in veterinary environments. His mum wasn’t sure if I would be able to touch him at all before his first session. Today, in his third session, he ran over from the car to greet me, let me touch him with the laser and palpate his whole body, and happily engaged in a full exercise session.
With a lot of desensitisation and co-operative care work, both in the session and at home with his lovely parents, he’s coming on leaps and bounds. Watching the more nervous dogs grow in confidence and begin to accept treatment is one of the reasons I do this job! Happy birthday, Saxon! 🎉

⭐ patient of this week is Mavis! Mavis had her first physio + chiro session 2 weeks ago and was back for a follow up physio session today! She’s a long sausage, so her mum is really on top of IVDD prevention. We’re working on building her balance, core strength and stabilising muscles, as well as improving her gait to ensure she is as protected as possible from back issues! Her mum has been doing her exercises consistently, and it’s paid off. Well done, Mavs! 🌭
